World Setting/atmosphere/Design:Dark Souls
Level design(as far as gameplay mechanics factor in):Dark Souls 2
Overall enemy/boss Difficulty: Dark Souls 2
PvP:Different meta, both good in there own ways.
COOP/Matchmakibg:SM ftl.
Demon's Souls deserves some recognition for starting it all. Don't think its best in any one area but it is the grandaddy nevertheless. If anything really stuck out, it was how huge each of the main areas were.
Also gotta make a special note to some areas in Dark Souls like Dragonbow Archers. That stuff was genius.
DS2 does a lot of things better. I love the improved cloth physics (and the cloaks and capes, but that's an aesthetic preference and isn't better or worse than DS1), the UI (especially the item box and inventory), and overall it was just a new Souls game to explore. I know Demon's and Dark Souls like the back of my hand. They are still two of my most favorite games, but I enjoyed the opportunity to explore a new world where I didn't know where to go or what to do. I also did like the levels, even if they weren't all connected. And I appreciate how they mix it up a bit in NG+. I also like a lot of the stat changes. (A lot. Not all.) And I hope DS1 gets a Steamworks patch whenever GFWL shuts down because online has been flawless for me except for those times when it's been down for everyone. I also did like the story of DS2 a lot. But .. it's most interesting points were how it possibly connects to DS1.
But DS1 is still the better game, to me. The world feels more alive. Not only because of the better story but because of the NPCs. NPCs in DS2 just move to Majula once you talk to them and stay put. And the two "main" NPCs (Lucatiel and Benhart) don't really have conclusions to their stories, and there are no branching paths. Whereas in DS1, NPCs moved around more and your action (or inaction) either saved them or damned them. Having full red and blue eye orbs are, I imagine, only better for PVP. For people that really enjoy invading, I feel bad that they have to spend extra time doing PvE to keep earning cracked orbs in DS2. Bosses in DS1 are also more interesting. DS2 has some cool bosses, but most of the bosses are just some variation of a giant knight. Woo. Also, I think the way the Way of Blue and Blue Sentinel covenants work is stupid. It's too much trouble for them to successfully interact.
I'm not a big min/maxer, so I can't get all technical with the pros and cons of each game. I love DS2, but I love DS1 more.
A fortress filled with traps ? Those are a dime a dozen.
Yea, they are, but what does taht have to do with a well designed dasterdly fortress that stopped almost all undead dead in their tracks? Double-deaded them. The reason it was such a unique area is because of how notorious it was for killing undead in the story, and in reality. Plus, Iron Tarkus. 'Nough said.
DkS2 on the other hand I've played about 60-65 hours now on PC, and on PS3 twice as much at least, and I'm getting bored of this already. I also hate Soul Memory. That's one of the reasons why I prefer DkS1. I rarely get invaded now, and depending on where you go and when, Co-op has some issues as well.
For example, I went to Shaded Ruins very early in the game, my SM was less than 200k. I saw no signs there, and after putting one myself, I didn't get summoned either.
If SL matchmaking still existed, I wouldn't have any trouble summoning people there.
There's no need for SM, (which FROM designed to protect newbies) when there are plenty of other fixes for this already in the game;
- Cracked Red Eye Orbs cost 10k each if you plan on buying them, and they're available only after starting NG+ (though I don't know does BA work)
- There is no "uncracked" (infinite use) version of it
- You can burn effigies to reduce chances of being invaded
- Lot of the good stuff isn't even found early in the game
- Being able to make infusions takes quite a lot of time (since you need the ember for it)
- Pyromancies scale with INT/FTH now
- Elemental infusions scale as well now, and aren't as powerful as they were in DkS1
- etc.
And last but not least, DkS2 copies A LOT of DkS1's bosses & enemies.
This is the reason Fromsoft will never learn how to make a good PC port. It shouldn't be up to the user to wait for some other player to code mods in order to fix a broken game. That's the devs job.
Anyway, DS2 is better, cause it's 1 more than DS1.
I know it was a badly ported. But people make it sound like it was annoying the play even *after* installing all those mods.
People are never satisfied and even if it's a broken game atleast they made a pc version because people were begging for it.
Buying a game only to find you have to go out of your way to find fixes (or wait for them to be made) generally makes you perceive the game as being bad, despite the actual content the game has.
Game development is not charity! You have to make money with it! And From are no exeption! They are not some inde devs!
A single enemy in DS1, like the Capri Demon, would make DS2 make harder, but what i see is: they created a lot (too many) "Player AI´s typed enemys and bosses", which are all using a similair moveset.
DS1>DS2 for game experience
but
DS2>DS1 for PvP (because it feels nice to have soo many viable weapons/builds)
Only a few examples which are cheap yes, but DS 2 is a constant stunlock gangbang with horrible tracking.
DS 2 wants to be challenging and from some parts it is like the heide knights, the Pursuer, the last giant, the lost sinner, old Iron King and maybe even the Bastille Sentries..
But i found DS 2 attempt to be hard coming more from a cheap way often tipping the scales in the ai's favor which could be challenging yes and sometimes done right like the narrow halls with the tortoise knights, which is kind of exciting.
But getting swarmed by a flock of exploding ghouls isn't challenging... Getting sniped by a line of archers while being outmanned 3 to 1 isn't challenging.. Having a bos that constantly swarms a mass of spiders, isn't challenging.. Battling black Ornstein, not so challenging..
I guess this thread is about what everyone looks for in a game.. but i didn't find it in DS 2. I completed it once now i know the end and i can uninstall and go back to DS 1.
