It uses a staff as a catalyst I believe?

There are 2 kinds of hexes. First is using staffs as a catalysts, Second is using chimes. Precise catalyst is mentioned in a hex's description. Also you can easely differentiate em, cause some hexes require more int to be used, while other need more faith. Or you can use Black Witch's Staff and use any magic you want.

There are int hexes which use staves and faith hexes which use chimes, look at the requirement of the specific spell to see which one a spell is.

Dark orb and many other hexes(like half of them really) use staves. Hexes started as an off branch of sorcery really.

I kinda remember a dialogue about hexes being miracles altered by sorcery (so hexes are both)

Pretty much all the hexes that consume souls to be used require a chime. The ones that don't require a staff.
