thx for the help :)

Looks like you did everything right. For good measure try going back to Earthen Peak and speaking to Pate again. Then go back to Shaded Ruins and speak with Creighton. Then head back over to the cave to see if that fixes it. I still freed Creighton from prison during my end game and I was still able to get everything working, so I'm not really sure why it isn't working for you.

i can try that with pate but creighten isnt in shaded ruins anymore :/ (pretty sure pate is gone too, but i try it tomorrow)

Creighton needs to no longer be in Shaded Ruins, and Pate needs to no longer be in Earthen Peak in order to trigger the fight. If one of them is still in their locations I listed, then you have not exhausted their options. There's a chance of course, you're looking in the wrong spot.

Question: when they are fighting each other what are we supposed to do then? watch? attack one or the other. I watched and Pate died eventually. Creighton was just surly with me afterwards.... So I killed him.. Did I miss out on anything?

If you assist in leading to one of the two's deaths, the victor will give you a replicate of his armor and a key to a chest. There's a wiki for this stuff.

ah ok thanks. I'll keep this in mind for NG+

You need to complete both of Pate's treasures to get him to move I think (FoFG and Earthern Peak). Unless you really, really want to kill one of them, or want Creighton's armor for RP purposes, the reward isn't that great.

Well here's the order of how I did it and it worked fine:

1. Talked to Pate in Forest of Fallen Giants.
2. Talked to Creighton in Huntsman's Copse.
3. Talked to Pate in Earthen Peak.
4. Talked to Creighton at Forked Road / Shaded Woods.
5. Met them both fighting in Brightstone Cove Tseldora.
6. Killed Creighton. [because I summoned Pate earlier]

Remember you must exhaust all of their dialog, keep mashing 'A' to advance their dialog until they just keep repeating themselves and that will signal you're progressing the quest.

Ways to fail the quest:

1. Killing either of them before they meet at Brightstone Cove. [obvious one]

2. If you summoned Pate for the Last Giant fight and kill him during the duel at Brightstone Cove, Creighton will not side with you and will not give you the key because he thinks you had an alliance with Pate... so be sure to kill Creighton if you summoned Pate for help.

3. If you don't deliver the final blow to either Pate or Creighton the game will think you took a neutral stance on the matter and you will not be rewarded with the key. The victor will just keep repeating the same nonsense dialog over and over, something along the lines of "What was his problem?".

The safest way to complete this side quest is to not summon Pate and kill him instead of Creighton because he's on the left and Creighton is on the right...

Pate will be an easier target as Creighton is usually jammed in to the corner of the room. Sometimes you'll get caught in the crossfire of Pates attacks if they're both positioned weird... normally I just shoot Pate with arrows until he dies... both of them are psycho scumbags so it hardly matters who you like more.

I was stuck on this questline too until I realized that I forgot to grab the great soul arrow(?), the treasure Pate alluded to in Earthen Peak. This treasure likes just outside the door to Pate's left. However, you cannot open it from Pate's side, you have to go around and to find it. Once I grabbed it, Pate says one more line of dialog and I warped over to Brightcove, entered the house and there they were fighting.

3. Final blow doesn't required. I just helped Pate and he still given me the key.
