Get naked, use lightning, try and bait is forward fire breath and when he flaps his wings run to the far side of the stadium make sure the run to his side and not is front or back when he flies up though.

Use a bonfire ascthetic on the splitting paths where the mist is then keep to the right as you enter it and you'll find a corpse with a ring on it. This ring will greatly reduce the damage you take from behind and pretty much a must in this fight. Now, when you're actually fighting him, you're going to want some lightning pine resins and fast weapon that doesn't drain much of your stamina, as you want to have at least half of your bar depending on on how much stamina you have to run. So for the actual strategy when fighting him, you're gonna want to stay on his hind legs and inside below his body and keep your camera fixed on his head. He's either going to do 3 moves: Stomp, which is easily avoidable, fire tail - he'll raise his front legs slowly, and breathe fire underneath him, you'll have plenty of time to get out and rebuff your weapon by the time he's done, and aoe fire - he will jump into the air and breathe fire onto the ground. This is where the ring comes into the play. You're going to want to find his tail and book it there. If you don't make it, don't worry, the ring will block most of the initial damage if you're facing away from the fire. I think the ring can take 5 of these before breaking.

I hope this helps you as much as it helped me, this boss had me sobbing to myself but is very easy once you figure him out

As long as you follow his instructions, it's only a matter of time.

A useful piece of equipment for the anceint dragon is the gyrm greatshield, it has 100% physical and fire block, so no more ohko's from his fire breath. At +9 (and maybe a bit lower in the upgrades like +6, only tested at base and +9) the gyrm greatshield can block two ticks of the big aoe fire breath at ~100+ stamina, not sure about the fire breath while he's on the ground since I just rushed in to get damage in.

Oh man i wish i saw this thread earlier today. That method in the video is downright perfect. Though he did go up in the air alot more than i had hoped, but i was far enough away to not get killed by the fire. Excellent method of defeating this boss. Little tricky at first but normally he'd do 3-4 fire breaths in a row,and go up in the air 1-2 times in a row. Only need to kill Vendrick and Darklurker. Ancient Dragon by far gave me the most trouble out of all the bosses, 2nd and 3rd is The Pursuer and Smelter Demon.

If you get the angle right, he only does his forward firebreath. Allways try to aim for the outward two talons and after depleting your stamina walk in a 45° angle away from him. As soon as he turns his body, run attack the other foot and mirror the whole procedure. This way he won't fly at all.
I had to try it some times, till I got the right angle. But as soon as you got the feeling for it, the whole fight turns into a walk in the park ^^
