b) you need to meet the faith requirement of the miracle you want to use
c) you need to attune the miracle to one of your attunement slots at a bonfire
d) if you do not have attunement slots, you need to raise your attunement level to get some (I believe you get your first one at level 10 attunement)
Second, you need attunement slots. There's a fair chance depending on your starter class that you have 0 to begin with. Raise your attunement stat during level ups or use a Northern Ritual Band for additional attunement slots traded off for max HP.
Third, you need the actual miracles. You can find them, loot them and buy them throughout the game.
Once you have all the above, go to a bonfire and select the attune option. The next window will show you what spells you have, their requirements, descriptions and whether or not they can be used (some miracles use more than 1 attunement slot)
Once you have prepared all this, equip your catalyst and hit attack. If a spell is attuned, it will cast that spell. R2 of the catalyst is usually a weak melee attack.
Northern Ritual Band increases spell uses (at the cost of HP) . Southern Ritual Band increases attunement slots (at no cost except a ring slot).
