What was in the mimic-looking chest in Black Gulch?
So there's this chest in Black Gulch that looks like a mimic, sitting in a pool of oil and with two poison statues behind it. Of course, I set it on fire, and it gets destroyed, and I get rubbish... oh...

Thanks, From Software. Was there anything of worth inside?

Don't worry about it.

It wasn't a mimic. You lose the item forever. It was a Divine Blessing.

Yeah, I figured once it broke. Funny how it's the only chest that looks like a mimic in the game that isn't one. Thanks.

You should probably avoid using heavy attacks to check if the chest is a mimic, only do that to iron chests cause they don't break. There is a way to figure out if they're mimics just by looking at then, but i won't tell if you don't want to get spoiled.

I know all this. The whole point of the discussion was that the chest did look like a mimic yet it wasn't. Thanks anyway.

There is only one way to tell a mimic from a chest. It isn't the type of chest, it is something inside the chest just visable.

I spent a good few minutes looking at mimics and plain chests to see if there is anything past what I typed above. Couldn't see breathing like in DkS1, no out of place parts, nothing but the above. I like how they are now. You have to 2nd guess all chests your first run but you also never have to attack any of them. Loyds still work, you can see the hint above, and you can just look for blood stains.

Mimics have a lock on them while normal wooden chests do not.

I don't know how to differentiate iron mimics from iron chests, but there's only 2 of those in the whole game and easy to remember where.

SPOILERS (and no I don't know how to black them out).

Teeth. You can just see the teeth in a mimic. Angle your view and you can see that the mouth is just open enough to see a sliver of teeth. I don't recall seeing a lock on any chest but the teeth are on any type of mimic.

Just remember TC, only hit a chest ONCE. ONCE AND ONCE ONLY! It doesn't matter the strength of the weapon you're using, just get ready a good one if it IS a Mimic. If it's a Mimic, you'll see a health bar pop up so get ready to fight.

The first one is a mimic, the second is a normal chest.
Notice the lock. And yeah you can see a bit of the teeth too.

And I might add to save future frustration, I believe every single item found in a wooden chest is something that's not unique(like shards or recovery items). Generally when there is something a little more 'unique' it ends up being something like a pre-upgraded weapon or a piece of armor you get later. Can't 100% confirm since I haven't marked down 'all wooden chests', but so far it's been that way for me(In Drangleic castle now on this playthrough).

So no frets if you do accidentally break one.
