Transferring save from a steam account to another one? (A desperate plea for help!)
I have quite the problem concerning my save file. On the character that I use, I am set to enter the throne of want. The problem is that this save file was used on a steam account that wasn't mine, (aka my room-mate). He let me save a character on his PC, but now that I have my own copy I was wondering if I could continue that adventure. Whenever I simply paste my save file onto my computer it comes up with the error that the save file could not be read. Restarting at this point would be unacceptable, and I'd consider it $50 lost on nothing. The levels I've obtained, the gear, etc. Hell, if it's possible to KEEP those and just embark once more I'd accept that.

Hopefully someone can help...

If the saves aren't ID locked then you could take the save from
C:\Users\XXX\AppData\Roaming\DarkSoulsII\

as far as I know it is impossible to transfer save files from one PC to another, let alone from one Steam account to another. I am sure that this will not work out.

How could I tell if the saves are not id locked, or is there anyway to unlock them?

It's not impossible. I use my same savefiles on multiple pcs. Just need to copy and paste. But I don't know if it works for another steam account as well. You have to try it out.

Try creating a game on YOUR steam account. The will create the save files with proper ID's. Then transfer that save to the save file location on your machine. Don't over write the save folder. Paste your save inside the save folder without changing the directory structure or folder names.

This is something I have not tried on this game but has worked in similiar situations.

Yes, this absolutely works as this is what I did with my savefile. Install the game and let it create it's folders, and then put just the savefile into the folder.

What you know is wrong. I play up at work and at home, I move my save from machine to machine every day via USB drive.

Possible that the saves are account locked, are you basing this on any fact or like your first assertion just pulling this info out of thin air?

I've tried that. It states "The save data was not loaded correctly", after that it asks if I want to create a new game.

Then the save file itself must be tied to your Steam ID which makes since for online purposes.

They are IDed to the owner of the account. Just start over. How many hours did you invest. You can only do better the 2nd time.

So I found a way to copy one DarkSoulsII character from one PC to another (Tested in offline mode, ver 1.01, calibration 1.05) :
You've got PC1, with the save file you want to keep and export.
You've got PC2, where you want to continue your adventures.

1. First, You must have created an useless character on PC2.
2. Start the game on PC2 and get into the character selection screen (Main menu => Continue).
4. Now, just overwrite the file located at "%appdata%/DarkSoulsII/XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX/DARKSII0000.sl2" from your PC1 to your PC2.
5. Get back to the Main menu => start a New Game.
6. Press "Escape" key two times, to skip intro, and quit this new game.
7. Return to the character selection screen, you might now see your characters from PC1 + the new game you just created.
Sometimes, the screen will display the new game several times: don't worry about it and try to load each of them, one should contain your game from PC1.
This is because characters information have not been updated in the menu, but after one successful loading and saving, the informations should update and become correct.
8. Profit!

Actually, it's the 6th step which updates your PC1's save file with the correct ID (or something similar I suppose), and which will prevent the "The save data was not loaded correctly" message from appearing and ruining your day.

Fairly sure save files are tagged with the steam account they were created by, so just moving them into the right folder may not be enough, and anything beyond that will most likely get you flagged for tampering with it.
