Best class..and best gift.
Probably a topic that has been talked about repeatedly. But I did not want to search for it...Sorry. I am trying Cleric as having the heal spell from the start seems like a good thing.

Also what do people feel is the best gift..

the class isn't all that important tbh, since at some point you will have leveled up so much that it will not matter. General rule of thumb is, if you want to go mage, roll a mage, if you want to go miracles, roll a priest, if you want to go dex and NEVER use magic, roll a bandit, if you think about dex and a bit o magic, use a swordsman, and if you want to go strg, pick the knight or the warrior. Deprived would be ok if you plan on a mundane build, though starting right off with a mundane build makes the game terribly hard, so its better to do something else first and reskill your character later, when you got enough levels at hand. I am at level 160 now, and I don't even really know where to put my points in, since it just does not matter for my current layout and playstyle, so sooner or later, you will just end up pumping points in stats you don't need anyway. Oh, and forget about that "capping at a certain level" bs, this will only lead to you beeing steamrolled by level 200+ players in ng+, since its all about souls memory at some point.

EDIT: Oh, and about the gift, in DaS2 there is no must have gift. If you want to farm the tutorial are for approx 50k souls to start right of with, take the bonfire ascetic, but in general, all items that you can get as a gift are also available in the game a plenty. I usually take the petrified something for the chance of a slap or a funny weapon for PvP, but again, I have 10 old whips and 6 channelers tridents, at least 3 demon hammers and more white rings than I have fingers on my current main character, more bonfire ascetics as I need too... just take what you want really.

Probably cleric, quick access to hexes with decent stats aside from the magic stuff. If you're willing to spend boss souls on the silvercat ring you can get Scraps of Life from the gutter early on, which will arm you with a VERY powerful hex to use against bosses.

As for best gift I'd say either healing wares since it can carry you through early areas pretty hard, or petrified something, on the off chance you get something godlike early on.

Cleric with the starting heal and I really like the mace, and then petrified something for the gift.

Start the class you want and enjoy the game, or are you a copycat that needs to clone others chars and style?

Petrified something gets you a good item very early on, so I'd go with that.

Class is definitely important in this game, the spread of starting stats is much more varied than dark souls so your class will define what spells and weapons you can use in early areas. Imo the only two really worth starting as at all are Warrior and Cleric--Warrior for high starting STR (since DEX is pretty trash) and Cleric for quick access to Scraps. I guess Sorc is alright if you REALLY want range early on, but Cleric starts out more well-balanced.

Cleric is easy (dual wield that club) to go early, due the extra heals.
I think every class is awesome.
Starting gift: Petrified Something OR healing set
