Last Giant didn't drop the soldier key
After killing the last giant all i got was his soul and not the key. Is ther any other way to get it or do i have to restart?

I would like to know the answer to this as well. I had the same glitch happen to me today.

Isn't the area optional? DS1 had a failsafe type thing for key items, not sure if 2 does, but it'll probably be around Majula or Things Betwixt if it does.

Technically, both starting areas are optional as you could go one way or the other.
They just can't be optional in the same session.
Well you NEED to do at least part of the Forest to get to the giant lord. Otherwise you can't get to Nashandra.

Technically you can jump there without using the key or king ring

In DS1 keys were actually worthless beyond reminding a player that they had access to an area and providing a hint via item description.

Some games perform a check when you try to open a door, if you have the key. If so they open. DS1 on the other hand didn't do this.

Instead, a flag is used instead to determine if an area should be open or closed. IE when you kill Capra, the depths flag changes from a 0 to a 1.

This can be proven by giving yourself a key via cheat engine, it won't do anything at all. Areas will still be locked.

In short: Try opening them without the key. If DS2 works the same way as the original and the flag triggered when you killed the giant..you might find that it'll open.

Huh? Jump where? As far as I'm aware Nashandra won't even be accessible without the giant lord being dead.
Ok guys... I know you wont like this. but Increase the difficulty, respawns boss. Good luck. and hope for the key to drop this time. (you get it just before you kill the lost sinner, you hop in some cages and what not.)

You can jump to the Giant Lord bonfire behind the King's Gate from the platform overlooking the valley area (the platform connected to the Cardinal bonfire)

It is tricky, but it works

...That still forces you to do part of the forest though... Was just saying the entire area isn't optional like Heide is.
