I assume you've tried the other solutions in this thread? If not, check over those.
- My opinion:
From everything I’ve seen, people pin the blame on your Antivirus (Norton or AVG for example) but I’ve had my Antivirus for months and never did any of the updates cause this problem for me. But I can’t say it’s never done it to someone else. It could always be a flaky driver, software, or antivirus that may need reinstalling if you’re having this annoying issue, but finding out witch one is a pain itself.
- Small fix:
I ran Halo on my Windows 8.1 with this issue, causing my windows to minimize several times (random) most of the time 10 -15 seconds. So what I did is set the shortcut of the game to Windows 7 Compatibility. Of course it cured problem for a while… but the thing was, it took a lot longer for the issue to keep coming back. Perhaps it’s fixed by now but you never know.
- How to set compatibility? (for game shortcuts):
Right click on your game shortcut (The icon that launches the game) select “Properties” usually towards the bottom of the menu after you right click. On top you’ll see tabs like “General, Shortcut, compatibility, security, and detail.”
Go to compatibility tab to check a little box that agrees to Running program in compatibility mode for: (Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8) once selecting your Windows Mode you click apply at the bottom then you should just run the game.
!! But steam games don’t have these options for compatibility !!
- How to make your own shortcut of Steam games
You’ll want to open Steam
> right click on your steam game > select Properties > Go to “LOCAL FILES” tab > select “BROWSE LOCAL FILES…”
Then you’ll be in the folder where hopefully you know what “game-name.exe” application file you use to launch the game with. Right click on that .exe file that launches the game and select “Copy” then “Paste Shortcut” to your Desktop.
Now you can edit your compatibility settings for that shortcut.
- But I don’t know what .exe file my game opens in!
Usually if the game opens a menu that you have to click start or open to start the game, then that’s a launcher. So usually you’re looking for a file with the game name and the word “Launcher” in it,
For example: Skyrim – Launcher.exe or League of Legends – Launcher.exe
If your game doesn’t include launcher in its name, then usually it’s just the game name but the file type is always “application” for example Halo.exe (description: application file.)
some games will have two .exe files with sp or mp next to the game name, that just stands for "single player" or multiplayer". I see this a lot with Call of duty games.
Dude, unsubscribe from this thread as soon as you read this, because the Necro Police will be here soon and they will kill us both
He is making a light hearted comment referring to people who get angry when old forum threads that haven't been posted on for a long time are posted on again, bringing them back to life like a Necromancer does, but in short... ignore him. :)
In regards to finding the right exe file, as you say you can create a shortcut to the game via Steam (right click on the game in Steam library, choose create shortcut), then if your right click on the shortcut that has been created on your desktop and choose properties in the "Target" box it should tell you the exe file.
Hope that helps.
"Hoping to be Necro'd"
Hmm yeah you're right, looks like a shortcut to a weblink when you do that.
Ok well your Steam games will be installed in the following directory, assuming you installed them in the default location:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common
In there you should find the Dark Souls exe and you can then set the compatibility settings you want. The exe will be in there somewhere, you might need to go through the folders in that directory.
Hope that helps!
see if you have something called Doomsday engine in your windows unistaler in control panel
I beluive removing this fixes the problem
RUN! THE NECRO POLICE ARE COMING! UNSUBSCRIBE FROM DISCUSSION! UNSUBSCRIBE NOOOOOOOOOOOW! *gets shot to death*
So give it a try, make a new account and perhaps that fixes it. Then you could backup your appdata essential(s).
