Actually the more there are, the less aggressive they are. Having more of them available is a viable strat if you have AOE spells like Flame Swathe.
The best strategy is to always try to kill them one at a time. You want to get one of them to just above 1/2 health, then, when he is open again do as much damage as possible. If he doesn't die run around and wait for him to do his fire attack which leaves him very open (and they only do it at <1/2 health). Doing it this way there will only be 2-3 gargoyles, and most of the time they will be stuck at 2.
Also, I was using the bog standard Drangliec Greatsword as my weapon.
So, I should have used a weapon that's just as slow? Hammer weapons have a similar swing speed to Greatswords. But yeah, Strike over Slash it seems, I'll remember that next time.
It depends on the enemy you're fighting, you realize that right? Bosses will have higher stats than the mooks in their area. And according to someone I've know that's played the console version for the last month, Luna's Beflry is an optional area to begin with.
But yeah, I'll make sure to boost a decent striking weapon for the next time I fight those swarming buggers.
