Eventually I just ran past him and found the real beginning in the hut.
Later on you will encounter more in open areas. I find that the sword I received as a knight was too short to attack and roll away. The best way is to just be patient and draw his attacks until he falls on the ground, hit him once (twice is sometimes too long), and repeat the process. The thing that kills you the most in Dark Souls is trying to get too many attacks in, having no energy, and then getting countered.
@hasbin apparently the ogre gives you a ring so i wanna see what dats all about...once again thanks for the help friends
This. I used to go full-offense in the original game with little consequence since I memorized attack patterns and all that, but this game is brutal when it comes to stamina and dedicated attacking. I tried attacking that giant boss 2-3 times before every dodge and got oneshot-stomped twice because of it. I kinda don't like it because it makes certain enemies a boring chore, but I see the reasoning behind it.
Burned into my memory forever!
