Peerblock
So I've been trying to use peerblock to prevent players from other continents to connect to me.
What I did: I loaded 2 lists of IPs, one with all the world set to BLOCK and another with europe set to ALLOW.
Then I disable peerblock to allow dark souls 2 to start and connect to the servers, once it is done I reenable peerblock, and load a save, but I still find people from america in my recent players tab on steam.

Is there anyone using the same program that would like to give me a hand to set this thing up? Because it's either this or playing offline... no point in getting good in pvp if then 75% of the fights don't depend on skill but just who hits the other most before the lag spike ends...

Not that I'm aware of, as matchmaking is done by FROM server. Any interference with it actually may end up with a ban even.

I think you can't really block the Connection because you connect via the steam API with them. and steam handles the Connection. I think it's p2p but the Connection is hidden behind the dedicated Server that sets up the connection

So it can't be done? Some days ago someone was talking about using this program to block players from faraway lands, so I decided to try, but if it's true that the connection passes through steam... actually I don't understand, even if it's steam, the connection between me and the other player is still p2p, right? So it should be blocked by peerblock no matter what?

Steam is like an central controll point. You use your online Item to connect with someone. Your request goes to the steam Server. The Server controlls the connection, based on where your char is and what Soul level you have. Everyone in onlinemode is connected to this Server and steam will establish the connection between you and a random steam user. You dont connect directly to the other person, you connect to the steam server. Your Opponent also connected to this server. Only the steam server knows your ip and his ip. The ip is hidden behind this server. Its a Bit like hideing behind a proxy.

You are a describing a dedicated server when we know DS2 uses a peer-to-peer system. It seems like Peerblock is simply having an issue with how Steam works, or OP didn't configure it properly.

EDIT: Have you tested it with other applications?

No i dont. A dedicated server handles the Network Flow and does operations, on a dedicated server everyone sends their Input Commands to the server and the server does operations with this information and sends the information to the connected users. The steam server does no operations. It only setsup the connection. Its like vpn or proxy.

Which means the clients are talking to each other directly, hence peerblock should be able to block it.

EDIT: You should read a bit on vpn and proxy before mentioning them in conversation, btw. Friendly advice.

I can't describe it better in english. And you still ignore the fact that you dont connect to the other player 1------1 because its impossible to connect to someone with a p2p connection without knowing his ip. Only steam knows both ips its 1----steam-----1 everyone connects to this global steam Service and steam. Your Opponent is hidden behind th server. The server does no opperations but the server is still in controll of the connection, thats why You get punished by disconnecting with alt+f4 this is why You See the messages from other players and so on just think about it, i can't describe it better sorry.

I'm testing with utorrent now and there's clearly something wrong since it blocks everything, even european countries that I set to allow... and yet right after that I summoned a guy from USA in game... either I'm doing something wrong or this is not p2p like c3lix says, and everything goes through steam...

Dont get me wrong. This is only what i think and it makes sense for me. It's Not a true p2p system and its also Not a real dedicated server/service. There have to be a server between player connection.

Edit: you may want to google for Centralized peer to peer server.

I forgot about this thread... I don't really need that anymore though, I guess I just got used to the lagginess, which is awful... that, and after 600+ hours I had enough of pvp in dark souls for the rest of my life I think.

If I don't want to be invaded I play offline :squirtmeh: If this thing worked it would have allowed only connections from europe, so I could still be invaded.
