Why were tail cut rewards removed?
I remember this being a pretty big thing in dks1 (never played des so not sure if it was in that).

For those who haven't played dks1, you could cut parts off certain bosses (usually tails), and you'd obtain a special weapon for doing so.

I found it a great feature, it added a small challenge to boss fights and some of the cut weapons were really cool/interesting.
So I'm really left wondering, why does dks2 have no boss cuts whatsoever? It even looks like they were supposed to be in, for example the last giant pulls his arm off at 50%, but if you get him to 50% by only attacking the arm it just falls off and he won't use it as a weapon. I think it's a big missed opportunity.

Come to think of it though, dks2 is a lot more casual as a whole. In dks1 you needed specific blacksmiths to upgrade/infuse certain elements. Infusing was only possible for lv5 weaps and required elemental titanite to upgrade further. You only got 1 titanite slab 'easily' per playthrough, for boss soul weapons you needed a specific weapon type at lv10+ (weapons went up to +15 in dks1) and a specific blacksmith to forge the boss weapon, etc.

Dks2 is just so basic. All blacksmiths have the same exact capabilities for upgrading/repairing, infusing is done by 1 smith (and can be done at any point and doesn't require special titanite to upgrade the weapon further), boss weapons take no effort either, you just trade the boss soul for them, easy, nothing invested or lost.

You can, but there's no big reward for it anymore, except removing certain attacks from the boss's pool (I'm thinking of mytha's tail, rotten's arms, najka's tails etc)

I kept trying to cut off Covetous Demon's tail but nothing happened. I'm really sad they removed this. They really should have put it into DS2!

No it wasn't, it's a DkS thing.

Poor wording, I meant the rewards. I've adjusted the title now.

You can do it,its the same as ds1 its not the damage you do to it,its the amount of times you hit it.
Try spamming a fast dagger(you still dont get anything for it)

I loved the tail cuts in the original.

It reminded me of the Monster Hunter franchise, which I adore.

Every time I got one of those tail cut weapons it seemed to be something I really couldn't use, like the greataxe I got for cutting the tail off the Gaping Dragon, which requires 34 strength, or the Moonlight Greatsword form Seath, which requires 28 intelligence. But it was fun to collect that stuff even if I didn't use it.

Perhaps it's just because 90% of bosses in DS2 are huge dudes in an armor.
But still, most of those tail weapons were a token of achievement for me, I haven't used any of those.

I was actually wondering the same thing. After cutting off the Covetous Demon's tail, I didn't receive any award. Why put that in the game if there is no purpose for it? I would understand if she attacked with her tail, and cutting it off made the fight easier, but she doesn't attack with it at all, so why?

I miss the tail weapons aswell, loved the gargoyle axe that actually swung. But like you said everything simplified now. And there are a lot more 'dude in armor' boses.

The only reward you can get from cutting specific part of the boss is Pharros Lockstone from The Rotten, which is SO useful.

I you sure, I've never heard that anywhere else.

"The arms can be cut off to reduce the lethality of the Rotten, preventing it from using the Butcher's Knife. However eventually they will grow back. The left arm will drop a Pharros' Lockstone once cut off."
