To weaken any would be attackers, so they're easy pickings. The fight with nashandra will start automatically after defeating the throne posse.

The Throne Watcher and Defender were not Nashandra's Bodyguard. They were actualy Vendrick's.

Vendrick actualy planned all your journey because he wanted to prevent his wife to access the throne and he knew only a chosen cursed one could step trough the path ahead and defeat her.

A few of the things you do it the game prove this point.


First the fact that he lock himself away and remove all his protection before turning hollow.
His soul is locked behind a door only accessible to someone in human form, so she can't get to it.
The ashen mist wich was given to the elder dragon.

She also needed you to reclaim the giant's kinship, which was pretty much impossible to do by herself. I don't remember the exact details but Vendrick did absolutely everything he could to ♥♥♥♥ her over as hard as humanly possible.

She also needed you to get the King's Ring in the Shrine of Amana, which she was unable to pass through.

Essentially, the Throne Bosses were the last hope of keeping Nashandra away/testing the Chosen Undead, and were never meant to be the real deterrent. Nashandra couldn't open the King's Door without the ring that was in the Undead Crypt, guarded by an area that is filled with an anti-Dark song. She couldn't open the throne/kiln itself (the final chair you sit in) without the Giant's Kinship. Which also couldn't be gotten without the Ashen Mist Heart, also hidden behind another King's Door.

Nashandra couldn't claim the throne because of all the obstacles Vendrick put in her way that sealed the doors. The Throne Bosses were just added measures.

The things we don'k know from the story is stuff like.

What did Vendrick stole from the giants?
Why is ornstein protection the Sentinel of the blue convenent?
Why was Shanalotte created by the dragon? (As some have theorised, if she really is the last firekeeper. Why dosen't the fire disapear when you kill her?)


I hope we learn more in the dlcs

what still doesn't make sense to me is: if the queen makes you kill the defender and watcher because she's too weak to defeat them, how can she pretend to defeat you then?

Throne watcher and throne defender both have dark boss souls, like Nashandra (and Velstadt). This indicates to me that they got corrupted and are working for her.

I think that the theory that Vendrick wanted to keep Nashandra from the throne is only half of the truth. It could also be that Nashandra wanted to prevent Vendrick from linking the flames, because it would have ended the reign of dark. They blocked each other.

At the end, it was all about the kinship of the giants, which she needed you to get for her.

I don't think she's too weak to defeat them. Remember, she has all the obstacles in her way, she just needed someone to clear them out and then, after they've exhausted their usefullness, Nshandra would kill them (due to their weakened state, she figured they'd be an easy kill, and Oh how wrong she was)
