Silly question as I am very far into the game with 1.5M souls and level 138. I still don't understand some basic aspects.

First, I am a strenght build, no magic. Why is it many weapons and armor have lower letters for strenght, but appear to be far superor to some items that have better letters. For example, my sword may be a C for strenght, but does far more damage that similar weapons with an A rating.

Second, I'm not sure where to go with leveling now. I am a duel wield with a Heide Sword + 10 and Flame Sword + 10. I do okay in PVP, but if I get smashed by a greatsword, I'm done. If I remain quick with my dodging, I do very well as I appear quicker. Here are my stats so far. Where should I level up?

Thanks for any advice. This community has really helped me enjoy this game, though I still swear at it regularly.

When I go to an empty equipment slot and select large club it show 0 (arrow) 180 in blue.
I finally understand. When I actually equip it, is shows 180 and then 168 in blue...or I could use the switch button. Dear god, I can likely dual wield two huge weapons now if I want.

Elemental dmg also has to take into account elemental resistance as well. With the exception of Heide Sword which already has Lightning as base, the other Longsword lose out Physical ATK to have Elemental ATK infused in, and you will have to deduct ATK on twice the defence (physical and elemental) on opponent. For e.g. in PvP if you fight with a Medium armoured FTH user this is going to be quite apparent as they got both defence on high with GMB.

Black Knight Greatsword is a good start, despite having Fire in base, because you can buff this with Flame Weapon which does not require INT/FTH to cast (no Pyromancy would)

Because the Malformed Skull can't scale off your STR/DEX so that's why it has higher base dmg. You don't see Large Club scaling bonus until you put it on, it could be 180 + 100 for all you know which come out better than Malformed Skull. It could be less and come out worse, but don't write off it just because of the lower base dmg. E.g my Uchigatana has a base of 210 ATK and +10, Manslayer at 230 at +5 and Darksteel Katana 190 at +10, yet the Darksteel come out higher in total because of the S scaling (minus the poison from Manslayer but that's another story).
I have a black knight greatsword, black knight halberd (need 26 dex, so 1 more point needed), and a large club. If I shed my swords, I can keep my weight below 70%. Club has the highest strength rating.

But it's also from the ring. Malformed also get the bonus from the ring but zero from the stat. Still, at say 40-50 STR the Large Club will scale ALOT better, at +0.
I do have the Ring of Blades +1 equipped. Also have the Zweiheinder or whatever, but scaling letters low.
Sigh. I have a Large Club +5 and I've lost 5 straight PvP battles. I'm simply not quick enough.
