edit: yep, "great soul embraced" lol
It's Seath's soul. The spider may be a boss bot the great soul comes from the dead dragon. If you look up from where the red entity is, it's directly above Seath's mouth.
Manscorpion Tark(us) makes reference to Seath never permanently dying but shifting forms for eternity. Also, hes in Brightstone Cove which happens to be a crystal quarry. On NG+ you get the Old Paledrake soul which can be traded for Crystal Soul Spear or the Moonlight Greatsword which you also get from Seath in the previous game. Crystal sorcery was also created by Seath.
A shiny, red, candy-like glowing ord: in Demon's Souls, don't touch it. Dark souls (1), research it first just in case, but it's probably ok. Dark Souls II, click it without thinking, nothing is deceptive and everything is forgiving.
If for some reason the dragon isn't Seath then it is the Duke just shortly after Freja as Seath also held the title of Duke in Dark Souls.
Just for interest: One should light the bonfire without killing the Duke and go to Tark. It would be interesting if he also talks about you killing his creator if the Duke is not dead.....
Anyways, more similarities between Seath and the Duke:
- The duke is said to crave things he doesnt have and wanting to change himself. Seath craved scales he didnt have and wanted to change himself with crystal magic
- Seath created abominations from humans. Brightstone Cove is populated with these weird human-spider hybrids, and Tark states that the Duke made many such creatures.
I can see how you would come to these conclusions but the four great souls that were found at the age of fire in Dark Souls were Nito's, Gwyn's, Witch of Izalith, and the Pygmy. As stated in Dark Souls, Gwynn gave a fragment of his great soul to Seath and 4 Kings. Since the great souls are eternal it suggests that Seath's soul is also eternal. There may be more than 4 souls but it is never said that the Everlasting dragons possessed any of them. Anyways, since just a fragment of a great soul is required for the lord vessel(which can be found smashed in Majula) and the Shrine of Winter requires 4 great souls(its plausible to assume that the shrine of winter was created to function similarly to the lord vessel) then it is safe to say that the great soul that is embraced near Freja is Seath's whether or not the dragon itself is actually Seath. Furthermore, it is plausible that From withheld Seath's soul due to the power of the weapons/spells it could be traded for as well as maintaining the flow that you kill a boss, you get that bosses soul as it could be confusing for new players otherwise.
