it does spook some enemies. you can spook boars. for real.
the real reason to use this shield though, is to derp around.

I know that this was asked about a year ago, but it is absolutely not just flavor text. You use the Porcine Shield to guide/herd a boar to the area where spiders drop from the ceiling. If you get the boar to this spot, he will eat the mushrooms in the center of the area, revealing a pickaxe.

You don't need the porcine shield to do that. Boars will follow you regardless of your equipment.
In fact, the red eye ring is the only thing that makes it easier to guide boars to the mushrooms.
