I'm also a fan of three straight swords: the Heide Knight Sword, Sun Sword, and Drakekeeper's Sword. Of the three I think the Sun Sword has the most versatility due to it's moveset and low stamina cost, not to mention excellent excellent scaling, but considering it requires leveling up in the Sunbros, can take a while to acquire, when the Heide Knight Sword can be acquired rather quickly and can provide some serious damage very early on. I think their only failings is that to get the most you gotta buff em, and don't cause a lot of poise damage against some of the poise-heavy enemies in the DLCs.
Well, here's my list:
Hand Axe. No infusions, just cleaving into fools who don't even know its moveset because no one ever uses axes. It's super lightweight and surprisingly effective for a basic 'starter weapon' type of thing (just like in DS1, actually). And I love how it just looks like a regular tool; I never was a fan of these broad-headed axes often depicted in fantasy media. Real battle axes actually have narrow heads for punching through armour.
Royal Greatsword. The Flamberge is better since it was buffed, but before then the RGS was capable of far more damage with the same status effect and moveset, the only real problem with it being its short reach. It could still be handy for a strength build after the dex-based greatsword moveset.
Great Scythe/Scythe of Nahr Alma. Everyone I've ever seen say anything about reapers complains about the sweetspot mechanic and laments over how much better the Great Sxythe was in DS1, but I find it rewarding to use a 'hard-mode' weapon like this. Once you get used to it, landing direct hits with the blade becomes fairly easy, at least in PVE, and the damage thus dealt seems to be higher than the weapon's AR would suggest.
Hmmmm. I may have to give this a try. THANK YOU VERY MUCH MY GOOD FELLOW!
- you can 2-hand it with mere 10/10 str/dex
- it has 166 AR out of the box, 130 counterdmg, B-scales in str (A with slight upgrade) while weighing less than most straight swords
- one-handed it has wide sweeping club moveset
And the kicker:
- you can get it after only beating Last Giant and Pursuer. Then go and absolutely destroy anything in Heide and kick ass for pretty much the rest of the game. Then go on NG+ and powerstance a pair of these monsters. Good Lord.
Might be wrong, but you might be able to get 2 of those in just NG. One out of the chest Mc-Duff is sitting on and the other from Mc-Duff after spending a fair number of souls at his shop along with a slab.
And I agree. Both of the hammers you get from the smiths are great. In PvE. In PvP (note this was before the balance changes) I found them to be very weak with no good combos. But since I quit playing DkS2 online (got sick of hackers) I don't know how they fair now.
The moveset of the mace for PvP is horrible.
