How to get max power with the smelter sword?
Started doing a smelter demon cosplay, and began crying when I saw how bad the smelter sword is. I can't really upgrade it yet because I'm still fairly mid/early game.

You need STR and INT.

You'll have an awful time with it early game. I've been doing a Soul Calibur 2 Nightmare Cosplay and the only one having a nightmare is me with the Greatsword moveset at low SL.

Get your int + faith to 60, str to 40 and you should start doing more damage.

I think the soft cap for the Fire BNS is around 30/30, or 60/1. Or 40/20. You know what I mean.

But... Smelter vs other bosses is fun...
srs note: I don't mind the moveset, it's damage I want. Golfswing is actually really powerful, the small amount of PvP I've done have ended in victories.

Can't really do that being early/midgame

Most the damage output for most weapons comes from upgrading them. You should be able to upgrade a few times "early game", just not completely.

Here's some of the early locations for the materials (dragon bone), taken from the page @wikidot[darksouls2.wikidot.com]
- One in the locked cell next to Straid of Olaphis in the Lost Bastille, just before the bridge that serves as an entrance to Sinner's Rise. The Bastille Key is needed to open the door. Bonfire Intensity 1 only. - One in the furnace before Smelter Demon in Iron Keep - the fire must be turned off on the right side of the building wall by turning the wheel - One in a chest on a platform above the Shaded Ruins bonfire and across the gap in Shaded Woods - Dropped by the Giant Basilisk in Shaded Woods - Dropped by a Crystal Lizard in Brightstone Cove Tseldora - Possible to receive when trading in exchange for Small Smooth & Silky Stones, Smooth & Silky Stones or Petrified Somethings with Dyna and Tillo in Things Betwixt

I meant int + faith = 60. so they total 60 which is the soft cap.

If you have the DLC you should get to that area early, plus you got two Petrified Dragonbones in the Shaded Woods. If you get to the DLC area early you can get your weapons up to pluss five almost ride away as the dino things can drop Petrified Dragonbone. I played through 80% of the game with Pursuer's UGS +5, unfortunatly the Greatsword has better scaling (even thought it start with an C), and it has the same moveset, so it was kinda pointless, that weapon is kinda pointless except it weight a little less.

Also a fully upgraded Smelter sword will do 610 damage fully upgraded with 40 strength and 10 dex. Not really any need for faith or int. 610 is plenty damage 30 more then the Greatsword.

You really don't need any int or faith (fire bonus). 40 str and 10 dex gives you enough dmg, if you can upgrade it to +5.

If you have the DLC there is so much Dragon bones that you would have no trouble upgrade it. If not it takes a while longer.

That would require getting to the Rotten... And the DLC area is pretty high level.

Backstab them. Smelter Sword should do OHKO in NG even without upgrade.
