whats the easiest way to kill the smelter demon?

Maces is good weapons against armored targets. So yeah. I use barbed mace +5. In ng++ it is oneshot-backstab for syan knights.

+6 is good for ng. +10 is awesome.

Boost your fire defense as much as you can. As the fight progresses Smelter Demon will light himself on fire which produces a constant AoE fire damage. Use flash sweat, orange burs, flame quartz ring and/or armor to help. There are also water pots and a fountain (use Pharros' stone to reveal) which you can roll through before entering the fog gate that help.

The best defensen against the smelter demon is actually Gyrm Greatshield that has both 100% physical defesen and 100% fire defense, plus very good stability. But if you are in Iron Keep you have probably not been to Doors of Pharros.

He is weak to Strike, Thrust and Lightning attacks.

Meaning that, in theory, the Heide Spear or Lance(s) (since it has both thrust and Lightning) are easily the best weapon against him. Aside from that you can either tank him with a Gyrm Greatshield as was stated above or better yet, practice your dodging with him.

I don't it to sound like I'm saying "gid gud" but the Smelter Demon Choreographs his attacks a lot and he has very little variation in them. If you time them and always remember to dodge TOWARDS his attacks (not the opposite side) then he becomes a trivial boss. Keep practicing that dodging and I'm sure you will eventually get it. The most you must be careful is if he suddenly decides to do a jumping attack, which CAN surprise you.

I don't want to sound like a noob, but I always summon lucatiel for help... The main reason for that: I want to finish her questline to gain all her equipment without killing her and she is really a great help.

If you want to do it alone: Get a Shield and manage your stamina. Don't get greedy: 1 or 2 strikes if you see an opening and then back off.
Learn the time, when you can heal up. Learn to dodge most of his attacks and block the ones you cannot figure out with your shield. And last tipp: If you still cannot make it, go somewhere else to level up a bit.

Toxic cloud is a good way to get rid of 1k ish HP so try that. Also bring help on him.

Get a gwrm shield, 100% fire resist, 100% Smelter rage quiting
