lock-on is not an auto-target mechanism.

To hit with the greatsword, you have to move into the desired attack direction. If you want to use the greatsword, learn to play without lock-on.

Poor advice above. The lock-on is an auto-target mechanism that is sometimes overridden by the character's movement. Some weapons, not all, allow you to turn after you've started up the attack, which is actually quite useful. Those weapons will override the auto-target feature of locking on.

Knowing this, you should learn to let go of the analog stick. If you're holding it in a direction impulsively, you're going to swing in that direction. This is really only a problem with the weapons that allow you to turn a significant amount while locked on, but all weapons will try to attack in the direction you're facing.

so its better for not working with auto lock?

Not exactly. If you try to free-aim everything with the Greatsword, the game is going to suck. A lot. With that weapon, you want practice letting go of the analog stick for the moment you decide to attack - or at least press forward when you attack.

The one-handed swings are much easier to hit with because they are wide arcs

Also keep some distance when hitting. When an enemy jumps or run into you, then most of the time you will hit in the wrong direction.
I think it's because the target is registered to be behind you for a short moment which makes you turn around.

I just tested it while standing still.

Just get used to press the analog stick into the attack direction.
Since the greatsword has this special targeting mechanic, you may want to master it.
Lock on or not doesn't really matter.

Two-hand it! It's fun. My favourite weapon.

I think he was just saying it's fun out of excitement. Once you master how to guide the greatswords one handed attacks (moreso the one handed R2) you'll feel pretty great using it. It's tracking can catch enemies at the end of their dodge (think of those rogues in Huntsmans Copse, they do that sidestep then you do a one handed r2, guide it with your left joystick and smash them with your greatsword). You could probably even do that in pvp if you're good at predicting people.
