When did YOU drop the Fire Longsword for something else?
Admit it: If you stumbled upon the tunnel in Forest of the Fallen Giants with a lizard spitting fireballs and the allure of shiny items, you couldn't resist temptation and went for it. Then, were promptly ambushed. Yep, good times.

Most of us looted the Fire Longsword and used it a great deal, until it got boring or something even more shiny stole our hearts. In fact, whoever finished the game with the Fire Longsword only has my grandest pity.

What weapon or moment got you to explore other weaponry? What did it take to tear yourself away from this sword?

never noticed the sword until the endgame of my first character, is that sword the equivalent of the drake sword in ds1 or what?

Not really.

Heide knight sword seemed better to me, so i never really used the fire longsword much.
That said the ultra greatsword was what ended up tearing me away from longswords and the like because of the pure damage it does.

I switched it with the drangleic greatsword after I reached Lost Bastile. Specifically that one point where most newbies are likely to rage quit the game lol. Fire longsword just wasn't enough for me at that ponit to handle it

I used it only for a short time after found it, because I think its damage is too low for the new enemies that appear, I redescovery its bright later in pvp, but only when I leveled up.
I'm a Berserk fan and I like weapons with high damage, so the ugs was my goal from the start, as soon I had proper stats I adopted the ugs as my standard weapon in pve.
I honestly don't remember much the first time I came across the fire longsword but I distinctly remember being really happy about finding the zweihander during my first (or second?) playthrough. Then I realized they changed the two-handed r2 attack to a poke instead of a slam and I was really disappointed. The one-handed and two-handed r2 from the zwei in dark souls 1 is so satisfying (because of the pancake effect but also the sound effect it makes). Even though the two handed r2 poke on the das2 version can send most enemies flying (or at least knock them down/stagger them) it's still not the same. The two handed poke seems like a thing for a dex greatsword. That's heresy! I always saw the zweihander as being all about strength. Not even meme-ing here (well maybe a little bit).

edit: apparently the zwei in dark souls 2 does the overhead slam with a one-handed r2 (I haven't used it in awhile_ but like I said, it's not the same.

True, they screwed up zwei in ds2. Also, It was a boner killer when I did a second r2 one-handed attack and it went backwards instead of forward :steamsad:

That too (the second part of the one-handed r2 going backwards)!. That's such a horrible moveset. The only reason I play dark souls 2 more is because it was my first dark souls game so I just like it more and dark souls 1 runs like crap on my laptop. Even with dsfix installed and configured to my needs.

I found the Claymore and the whole greatsword weapon type, and then I knew that was my true calling in life.

Then, of course, being the newb I am I made my Bastar d Sword+10 raw because I was like "Oh dang, a free damage boost? Wow, thats OP as hell!" and promptly got destroyed when I went into NG+ on that save, and I even respecced for little to no strength just because it seemed to not make a difference, so I now have a 20 strength, i think 11 dex character with around 40 adaptability, 40 hp, 40 endurance, and 40 vitality. (The space between the r and d is intentional because steams swear filter blocks out that word)

I never really used it. If I'm going for a STR build I would stick with the club until I got something heavier. If I went for DEX I would hang onto the hand axe until I find some spears.

No it's just a really good early game weapon as it has a fire infusion.

Wouldn't the shortsword you get in FoFG be a better temporary dex weapon? Then after you beat the Flexile Sentry you could get that hidden scimitar. For spears though the best early game spear you could get is the winged spear from the spear hollow soldiers but it's a b*tch to farm.

No. Two-handing the Heide Knight Sword makes the Shortsword seem like a joke. The Hand Axe isn't even better than the simple Club, and honestly, once you get the hammer from Lenigrast, that becomes the better choice. But then there's the Drangleic Sword, which is a helluva weapon with high Str and Dex. The Shortsword is really only advantageous if you are trying to minimize equip load.

Partly is because I really don't like most sword animations it's why I either swing full STR or full DEX. Seems like a trivial reason but it does affect my enjoyment.

Dropped it pretty fast, killed like 2 hallows with it, shurgged and moved on to experimenting with other weapons.
Though I did a jedi cosplay and used that thing the whole game as was the point and made some stuff a smidge tougher late game.

I am in Shrine of Amana now and haven't yet encountered a weapon that wouldn't feel worse. And yes, I have access to all the weapons you can get till this point. And Bell Tower trespassers could tell you stories about how they got vanquished with the fire longsword, even if I got sucked into the invasion wearing my farming gear.
