Guide: Enable Proton Compatibility

The game is currently packaged with an incompatible Java version. In order to enable a temporary fix and allow it to be run with Proton, follow the steps below. You need Protontricks unless you want to have your ears blasted with audio problems.

1. https://download.java.net/openjdk/jdk20/ri/openjdk-20+36_windows-x64_bin.zip
2. Extract this file to a location of your choosing.
3. Right click the game on Steam, properties, installed files, browse installed files.
4. Copy the extracted file tree from step 2.
5. Paste the file tree into /Universal Conquest/jre, write into, overwrite.
6. Verify that the game now launches using Proton.
7. Ctrl+Alt+T into a terminal and run the command: protontricks 2363060 xact
8. You can play, you can even play a lot, or you can play responsibly.

Tested on Proton-9.0.3 and Proton Experimental.
