Yes, for me train sim is an idler. There is a whole genre where people go on YouTube to watch train rides. They put them on big TVs and fall asleep to them, read books, and things like that. It's not dissimilar from the lo-fi genre.
While it's true that I have no interest in fixing the train or optimizing the train rides, I do quite enjoy idling on a train.
To know how long the scenario it is best to select from the timetable a long route and once in the driver's seat stand up and let the AI take over you will be prompted to relinquish control, you say yes and have a seat.
If you mean a continuous loop, none that I'm aware of. Each route has a start and a finish, whether it's the same place or two different locations.
