Optimization is terrible!!!
I am running on great equipment. 5950, 6900xt 64gb of ram. On 4k ultra I can only maintain 40fps average. I lower the res to 1080 and it still averages 45 frames. For a $90 game this is crazy.

The artists and coders at Focus Entertainment's DTG are perfectly capable, talented people. But the software does not get optimised because the Production team have absolutely no ability to plan, and no desire to learn the skills needed to triangle a release, or set standards that can be tested against in a QA framework.

Hopefully Focus Entertainment will address this with the senior management under their "DTG" branch, and require them to change their approach, and try to mature into a software developer. Otherwise DTG is just going to further trash the reputation of Focus Entertainment, which used to make some pretty solid games.
Being a long time DTG customer I disagree on "perfectly capable" because they often fail to address very simple issues that would take a perfectly capable coder an afternoon, and the game development is going very slowly for seven years now.

When TSW came out, they thought they would not have to create LODs, people would buy better hardware to play it, facing a massive backlash.

Focus will let DTG alone, as long as the cash comes in.

Just try set the clouds (sky quality) to low/Medium or high (not above) and set the fog volume to low. If its not enough try shadows to medium.

did you try playing the route multiple times?? DTG did say that the first time you load the route there will be micro stutters. 2nd+ times it should be gone. I've been playing the last few days and did notice frame drops but still averaging in 100s after the first go round.

Keep positive guys - and yes there is room for improvement :-) Just for information. Hopefully the TWS guys will find it helpfull. I am running everything in TSW4 on MAX/ultra settings. It is lagging slightly. My setup is running the same FPS (57,3) as TSW3. My setup is: Processor AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-Core Processor 3.70 GHz, 32,0 GB. The GPU is AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT. I am running a 49 inch Samsung in 5120*1440. Windows 11. I know it's not the same game but to compare both my Euro truck and American truck simulator is giving me 71 FPS on MAX/ultra setting and no lagging.

I am playing on Ultra at 4k on a 5800x / RTX 3080 with 32GB Ram and getting around 90 FPS on average but the usual occasional drops that they have not addressed across multiple releases which I assume is to do with the streaming of assets. The new American route seems more heavy than average.

Its also likely that its caching shaders on a the first play of a route so it may improve the second time you go through the same area.

No problem here.
The usual first time route driving, caching shaders, only causes some fps drops to 60.
After that's done, between 120 and 165 fps on Ultra/4k+150%. Rig's still bored.
So i might even try +200%

Specs: i9 13900KF, 32GB DDR5-6000, RTX 4090, NVMe PCIx 4.0

Simple Advise: find your bottlenecks before complaining about bad optimisations...

We shall see if you are correct or if your system is crap, because i'm pretty sure my 4090 13900k with 64gbs of ddr5 ram will smoke this game.

Throwing insanely powerful hardware at a game doesnt really prove anything because it may just brute force past any bad optimisations. The same people showed up flexing their rigs for TLOR saying it was the fault of peoples machines before Naughty Dog admitted the game needed more work and fixed everything.

It is TERRIBLY optimized. like, so far this is the worst optimized game ive ever played. not even COD is this bad

TSW has to be played with engine ini tweaks to be enjoyable with reduced stutters, better graphics and potentialy better overall performance.
Alternatively google for TSW 4 Lighting & Graphic Enhancement - its a great automated way for route to route ini tweaks with different presets.

That said your gpu is not strong enough to for 4k in this game with decent graphics!
45 fps in 1080p seems extremely low though but could be if you start at a bad performing spot - there are a few across the routes.

I haven't played much, i never had any problems, even with VR (Quest3) it works without any problems.

some amd cards just do not like unreal engine
can happen with nvidia too

also windows can act up
one time i could not run any dx12 game at all
that was before an big windows 11 update
and that update suddenly fixed it
and now everything runs fine again
strange things can happen

story like but all my other games run fine
does not always say something
maybe it counts if you are playing for over more then 500 different games

with all the numerous hardware setups and such

Over the years (since 2018 iirc - TSW HH, TSW 2020, TSW2, TSW3, TSW4):
i7 3770K, GTX 970 - drops down to 30fps on some routes
R5 3600, GTX 1660 - drops down to 30fps on some routes
R7 5800X, RTX 3060 Ti - drops down to 30fps on some routes
R7 5800X, RTX 4080 S - drops down to 30fps on some routes

Plus constant stutters except for a few routes.

I had and still have my days where my FPS can get a little low, I do believe that the modified engine ini file has helped tremendously along with the way I update my GPU drivers, I should add that I do not jump on the most recent driver update as soon as it is live. I don't need to have nor do I want to have popups that the latest driver is ready to install, and many times others have had to roll back drivers just to correct an issue. Be it Nvidia or AMD.

This is how I update my drivers When there is an absolute need or I just want to or to see if the updates help or not. I have been doing GPU driver updates like this going back to the days when it was ATI. Yes, I do believe all the junk Nvidia installs and maybe even AMD when doing a driver install and update impacts the system as well as how the game could be affected.

and what is needed to do what is shown in the video.
