Supplies are shared within a task force, so you can have a supply support vessel(s) within a task force instead of putting supply bays on different ships.
Let's take an example:
You have a sole cruiser with 2 supply bays which provides 8 turns of supplies (shown when you hover on the taskforce icon). So as long as you stay within 8 turns of your closest colony you will never run out of supplies, as new supplies from colonies will arrive before you run out.
Now if you do move further away, let's say 10 turns from the closest colony. You will be out of supplies for 2 turns every 10 turns. During those 2 turns, your task force will slow down to half it's normal speed, and it will be limited to core system repairs only (can't repair weapons or special components). Also can't replenish ammo, fighters, crew and so on.
