Then try installing a Source Port such as DoomsDay Engine.
1-Download zdoom.
2-Go to C:/programmefiles(X86)/steam/SteamApps/common/Hexen/base
3-delete or remove to a safe place dosbox.exe (I just deleted it, these games are really tiny d'loads so no worries really)
4-Unrar zdoom.rar into an empty folder or to somewhere you can get to it easily.
5-Change the name of zdoom.exe to dosbox.exe (right click/rename and type dosbox.exe)
6-transfer contents of zdoom.rar including the renamed .exe into the folder called base (at this point you should notice that the zdoom.exe that you renamed to dosbox.exe has changed in appearance and now looks exactly like the dosbox.exe that you previously deleted)
7-Close, navigate to your library and start game.
You should find that it is much smoother with better graphics. Great controller support in options, you have to enable the gamepad. It is configured (for xb360 pad) -

Turn, look up/down - Right Stick
Change Weapon - L & R shoulder buttons
Attack - Right Trigger
Use/Action/open doors etc - A button
Jump - Y button
That's all I've Sussed Out so far.
I Have used the above method for Heretic, Hexen : Beyond Heretic and Hexen : DeathKings of the Dark Citadel and it worked perfectly on all three with exactly the same results for all three and I bet it will woprk for any similar games on Dosbox.
Anyway, I had to re install Hexen and do it over to make sure I got it right. Wether it shows as .exe depends how you have your folder display set up. The file you need to replace is dosbox application and it looks like the dosbox logo (brown square with yellow writing) and in that case you should just change the zdoom file to dosbox and not dosbox.exe, also you don't have to remove the dosbox file before putting the renamed zdoom file into the base folder, that's only if you want to keep it. You can - change the zdoom to dosbox (rename)/copy paste the contents of zdoom .rar inluding the renamed file to base folder/ select replace the file when asked/ exit folders/start your game in the normal way.
