Hexen: Beyond Heretic

Multiplayer..
I bought a couple copies of this game to use myself and give to friends, however within the games options I can't find any way to host or join or really any mention of online co-op.

Is it possible to do so without third party programs? If so, can anyone possibly tell me how? If not, can anyone recommend any that aren't all like pure pvp/funservers? The friends I purchased the game for have never played it, and I'm really hoping to have a nice long dungeon crawl with them.

You need to start the multiplayer from the command line. Info on how to do this is here:

If you're using GZDoom, I made a server and client program about a year ago, the host sets the settings in the Server app and other players join the game through Client starter, it's very simple.

I am in fact playing GZdoom. I have a few more concerns; if I use your server and client program, do I need actual physical server space, or since it's so low res should a modern gaming pc be able to act as one while running and playing the game?

Will your server appa llow me to play a private co-op? I'm really looking forward to that, if so.

also, how will I go about utilizing your client application? Will I launch and configure it and then launch the game, opening up the cmd line and oging from there? I'm very sorry for the newb questions

GZDoom doesn't support dedicated servers (the PC is just a server and not also a client), so when you start a server, you are also one of the players. It doesn't take up much performance, but if you want to play in more than about 4 players, it's gonna be crunchy on connection speed. LAN cable is recommended, but it is somewhat possible even through Hamachi.
If you get an "Out of sync" error, you need to restart the game (ie. start the server again and let other connect to it, again.).
There's a feature in ZDoom that uses the server-client style (normally it's p2p, every PC is talking with each other and with more players it's very connection consuming.). It's not included in my program, so if you want me to add it there, just tell me. But try the standard way, first, it shouldn't make trouble.

As for the client, it will run the game with specific parameters and that is what IWAD (what game) it is using and what IP it is connecting to. The game will take care of everything. You can find the IP of the host when you type "ipconfig" in the Windows Command Line Prompt (if you're using LAN cable, it's gonna be 192.168.0.<some number>, if you're using Hamachi, just use its IP.)

Looks like I made this longer than I wanted to.. :D

alright thanks. connection speed shouldnt be a problem as there are only about tw other people I intend to play it with; if it was easy toa ccess multiplayer that'd be anopther thingaltogether.

Might actually look into the Doom 3 Mod that was supposed to bring about a sort of unofficial sequel, as i imagine it would be much easier to create/join MP; has anyone tried this, does it live up to the name?

You mean a Doom 3 mod for (G)ZDoom or some mod for Doom 3? I'm confused. :D

If you mean for GZDoom, then probably no. It would have to alter the source code to do changes like this. You may want to check out Zandronum, which is a fork of ZDoom and GZDoom for enhanced multiplayer. It has more modes, easier making of games and servers etc., but it lacks some advanced features of ZDoom, so I don't use it much (I'm mainly playing singleplayer).

If you mean the Doom 3 mod, then you probably mean Hexen: Edge of Chaos, which is an unofficial sequel, but it's currently work in proggress and I think there's only one episode done. I'm not sure if it supports multiplayer, but from the looks of it, it's more less better for singleplayer.
