Audiosurf 2 is better overall. It supports user-made skins and game modes and has a much more interesting track generation algorithm which makes for cooler-looking tracks. The re-worked official game modes are also mechanically superior overall (I won't go into details since you haven't played the first game).
If you want to get into the puzzle modes and feel horribly overwhelmed by them in AS2, consider giving AS1 a try since it features casual (training) modes for the puzzle characters with fewer colors and empty side lanes.
First off, the mods and skins and whatnot. Call me whatever you like, but I like to switch things up every now and then. It's a huge part of the reason why I bought a smartwatch, when I tire of one watch face, I can get another.
Same thing here, bored of one look, download another. It's great!
I generally only play mono or surf, because the puzzle modes divert too much of my attention from the music, but the controls feel much tighter in those two modes than in Audiosurf 1.
Finally, track generation, not only is it more interesting and less predictable than 1, but depending on the music you listen to, it's much better.
I listen to a lot of classical and orchestral stuff, and Audiosurf 2 handles stuff that isn't pop, and rock and roll far, far better than the first one did. In fact, the track generation improvements are to me worth the price of admission all on their own.
That's my two cents. Though I would also like to point out, that you really can't go wrong with either.
Well are you really surprised? Not only is this in the Audiosurf 2 forum, but 2 is the sequel to 1. Since this game is all about it's engine and technical bits, and not story or characters, it makes sense that there would be far more improvements over 1 than things that are worse than 1.
This is one of those kinds of games where, in my opinion, there isn't really a reason to ever go with the older one. It's like asking which is better: Flight simulator 1 or Flight simulator 2.
