You can load an hour long track, you just might not be able to play the whole thing.

I have found that sometimes the game will crash after 20 minutes into a track or sometimes longer. Most of the standard game modes really struggle with long tracks.

I did find one mod in the workshop: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=450434677&searchtext=relax%5D called Mono Relax by .revo and that seems to slow down the track (it sounds the same, it just physically slows down the track when you ride it) and produces less color blocks and greys. This mod did allow me to play much longer tracks but still wouldn't play an hours worth of music.

I don't know if there is an issue with how long a track is or if it's more to do with how fast it is or how complex it is and how many blocks need to be created over time. The game just seems to really not like long songs.

It also doesn't like it if you play multiple songs for a few hours and will either freeze at the end of a song or will just crash all together. I have tried to play boxset albums with more than say 2 discs worth of music and if that takes a few hours, then the game will eventually crash.

Edit: I've just been looking at some of the .lua files for the various modes in the game to see what changes need to be made in order to allow the playing of much longer songs. The main issue is it entirely depends on how fast and complex any song is and in turn how many different blocks that will produce. At the moment if you play a song that is generally quite slow or not as complex, you can play a very long track (I think the upper limit is still 60 minutes however as that is just built into the game) but as soon as you play anything that has a fast tempo or lots of complexity (usually electronic music fits this category), then you're lucky if you get 20 minutes max.

With the Casual mode, the .lua script slows down the players speed, reduces the percentage of grey blocks and makes the track less steep. It also alters the scoring somewhat but that doesn't effect how the track feels or plays and what length of song you can play.

I am going to do some tests and alter the script a little to see if I can reduce the number of color blocks also as this will reduce the total number of blocks overall and may help with being able to play longer songs. I may also set the speed back to normal (I am using the Mono mode as a baseline, or 'normal') as I feel in Casual, it's a little too slow and feels off, you have to move slightly earlier to collect the colored blocks or avoid the greys.

I think if I also make the track even less steep and try to make the fast downhill sections less prominent and extreme, this will have the knock-on effect of also reducing the number of blocks produced and help with making the track feel calmer and enable you to play longer tracks.

I want to keep the same feel as Mono but with the reduction in blocks and extreme downhill/fast sections as the ultimate goal is to be able to play an hour-long track from start to finish, with no crashes. As a bonus, it would be good to keep the same scoring method. Admittedly, with less blocks to collect, the score will be smaller.

I'll let you know how I get on.

UPDATE: Ok, I just wanted to do an update about my experiments and a fix I have found which enables you to play long songs without having to mod any of the current game mods yourself or downloading a mod from the workshop.

I tried various different edits of the LUA files to try and get the game to play long songs and I just couldn't get it to work unfortunately. I could get a track to be slower and with less hills but no matter what, a song would always crash the game around the 20 minute mark.

That was when I discovered this thread: https://steamcommunity.com/app/235800/discussions/0/3557193237097682284/

It shows a link for https://audiosurf2.info/ which if you go to the download page, has a download for getting YouTube streaming to work again and also, more importantly for us, has a fix for playing long songs.

There is a YouTube video showing how to install the files (you need to enable the beforejune2018 beta in the game) and copy the files to the relevant AS2 Steam folders.

I have tested the fix with a couple of long tracks (both around an hour or more) in Mono mode and they both played fine, right to the end and with no problems. I would highly recommend downloading these files, especially if you want to play long tracks.
thx guys
