No. The video has to be show on screen because of certain conditions of the YouTube API Terms of Service.

What does that even mean? You don't HAVE to play YouTube videos; just play local songs from your hard drive.

SoundCloud support had to be removed and replaced with YouTube because of some change in SoundCloud's Terms of Service. Going back to the older AS2 build isn't going to change anything.

To be fair, soundcloud has kinda gone downhill in service over the past few years anyways. I remember when soundcloud was attached to EVERYTHING, and then suddenly it got dropped by everything all the sudden. This isnt the first time this has happened, it just happens to affect AS2 now. Nothing the creator of AS can really do about it either, so best not to complain here. I would blame soundcloud instead. It's their TOS that changed after all.

Oh, and also if you have a mouse with a scroll bar that clicks in, you can move the video around to somewhere you can more easily ignore. Start up a youtube song, pause it and click the center mouse button where you want it. It stays there unless you move it again, even on songs you play afterwards, so no worries about having to move it again afterwards. People found that out when there was an issue with the video getting in the way of buttons in the pause menu. It isnt much, but some people have even gone so far as to move the video into a corner and just putting a sticky note over where the video is on the screen.

but we shouldnt need to download music for it to work. we should be able to look up music, play a few rounds, and not be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ at by a white block of failure that is the youtube api. surely theres better things than the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ youtube api

It isn't exactly what you're asking for, but it is possible to move the youtube video so that it isn't quite so annoying. Personally I have mine directly under the track map in the top left.

Pausing the game and clicking mouse 3 (The scroll wheel on most mice) move the video.
