If you do want to play through them, Mary Skelter 2 includes a remake of the first game, Mary Skelter: Nightmares. Both versions of the first game have exactly the same story, but the remake contains a new post-game ending. In my opinion, the original version's gameplay is much better, but the remake is passable and has fewer technical issues.
It's also worth mentioning the recommended order because there are two ways to go about it. Many people suggest playing them in the order 2 > Nightmares remake > Finale. It's hard to explain why without spoiling anything, except to say that the remake's post-game ending spoils 2. But I would recommend experiencing the story as it was released: Nightmares main story > 2 > Nightmares remake post-game > Finale. I think Nightmares is a much better introduction to the setting and characters, and I think 2 loses a lot of its emotional impact if played first.
