The store clerk told me that it required Steam to be active but assured me it would install from the DVD's. He was wrong about the Steam thing. It never required it during installation (it wasn't even loaded), and installation went smooth, but it required me to log on to Uplay before playing. It still doesn't need Steam to be running to play it, which is ironic since now I actually want it to be recognized by Steam...
And yes, it's a big game filling up 3 DVDs.
But as for the download speed on Steam I've noticed it's actually pretty quick. My internet connection is not fast even when it's working, and has a max speed of 768 Mbit/s. However when I download from Steam it's sometimes as high as 2,4 MB/s, so I suspect Steam calculates the speed depending on the compression rate of the downloaded data, so you probabably only download about half or a third of the data for most games, meaning you would 'only' have to download about 8-12 GB or something...
It supports all of the latest hardware configurations of course, including SLI/Crossfire and all the CPU's you can throw at it.
I have 32 GB RAM, a 6 core Intel CPU and the 690 NVidia card (a SLI card in one card basically), and the new NVidia GeForce Experience which automatically configures selected games for best performance (this game is one of them as of about a week ago), and it set everything to max, and the experience is awesome.
I have only completed the first few normal campaign missions so far as I mainly only have time to play on weekends, but my concentration is constantly distracted by the jaw-dropping graphics in this game.
But you're right it will probably drop in price, but it might take a while since it has gotten very good reviews. 'Everyone' agress that it's the best release since the first Splinter Cell game.
If you have other games to play while you wait, play them. I have probably like 50 games I have never run here on Steam, but can't seem to drag myself out of this...
And now Total War: Rome 2 has started pre-downloading... Damn... I need to quit my job soon to be able to play all these games :P
Normal movie ticket is 100 NOK - or about 15 dollars, which is actually cheaper than in the US I think? (3D movies are 50% more though, as are movies in 'luxury' theatres with 'free' tea/coffee and individual lean-back leather chairs with armrests and tables on each side of the chair etc...)
Anyway, a game can be enjoyed for a long time, while a movie only lasts for a few hours, so I'm good with it :)
Yes, like mentioned above the boxed version has no connection with Steam, only Uplay (at least the Nordic version).
