Is this game difficult, or am I playing badly?

I've played a lot of games in this genre and got this thinking it would click with me but I am getting my ass kicked so much. Even with nearly maxed out meta stats. Took me forever to unlock a second character and that was frustrating, but they feel even more under powered.

What can I do to have a better time?

have you been upgrading the character stats and using item you want to use not to mention you always need to move

I feel like it's one of the more difficult VS-like games. That's not a bad thing, but it can be discouraging.
