anyone have some hints as to where to find coal? i cant get it from anything ive been mining with that melee tool. none floating around within range of the pod either that i can find.

there are some in the starting zone, its the Black ore floating around there are small chunks that you can pick up by hand, and some larger ones that you can mine with the hand tool
Grayish is Iron.
Redish/ brown is Copper
Black is Coal

To get a mining drill you need coal. The only coal I found is in large chunks which require a mining drill. I've died a few times trying to find coal.

Most of the large chunks have three little chunks floating around it. Right at the starting area there are about four or five of the big ones.

found a steady spawn, about 50m above the escape pod maybe 45 degrees up

there is large amount of coal directly above the first cave... the one with most asteroid miner fragments...
