Still one of my fave games ever.
I wonder if the Original War developers could be petitioned/bribed etc to make it....? :)
The main reason why the community won't make a Spiritual Successor to OW is simply because it takes alot of time. Most people also don't have all of the required skills to make an entire game (Even if they used a 3rd party engine like Unity). To make a true successor to OW it would require modifying an existing engine alot to get all of the features. Without all of OW's unique features it wouldn't be a successor to OW.
Simplest Solution is just to make a mod for OW which continues the story. Story is the real thing people want.
Yes, story is important, but I wouldn't mind changing some things. F.E. these days it would make sense they would use drones for scouting the terrain.
But what I personally am craving mostly is any rts game where you can build base but cannot magically increase the amount of your troops.
By the looks of it they just sent generic parts to the past. Americans anyway would have no need for any scouting drones/etc as from their perspective they are the only ones going back in time.
Arabians were just mercs with the goal to stop the Americans and destroy Siberite (Because the Oil Price would fall if Siberite was used), so they likely would only have the basic stuff that they were wearing/carrying.
The Arabians were the ones who accidentally sent the EON back in time while they were trying to increase its capacity. This lead to the alternate future where the americans succeed in moving Siberite to Alaska. As a result the Americans had an ample supply of Siberite which they used. Russians as a result couldn't stand upto America, their economy would be ruined, etc. But they did find the EON and have enough siberite to travel back in time to stop the Americans.
Russians accidentally destroyed the EON.
One of the design documents has the basic story:
http://owsupport.com/files/public/OW-Background.rtf
You could argue that they may have made drones in the past with the resources sent back, but if the components were not small you wouldn't be able to make tiny drone parts. You could also argue that they have drones, just drone vehicles (Computer Controlled).
It kinda make sense, arial photography is way better, faster and cheaper than mapping the land by food or with tank, and, I would say, they needed to extract and move the siberite with the original plan, so they needed basic cartography for finding the best route.
Also, I wouldnt stick so much to that point, they actually have means to create mass murdering weapons, if there were no Russians, why would they have it packed in the crates?
- usually I think of it as if they are just using all faction crates and Russians indeed packed those weapons.
Thank you for that document BTW.
Well they would at least have had machine guns/etc due to the local animals/etc. Like them saber tooth cat things. When it comes to vehicles with guns/etc they would have just used the raw materials from the crates and modify them. After all your scientists keep inventing new stuff.
You also have to remember that by the time macmillan reaches the past, either 1 or 2 years have already passed since the first person arrived. So they have had some time to make stuff and have already ran into the russians.
The story of original war is a very compelling aspect of it. (Very Original :P ) and it would be so great to see a sequel for it. No other game does quite what OW did, and there is a definite *gap* that needs to be filled as it were. It is not my intention to *dis* the work done by modders, but I have tried a few of them and they simply don't capture the same compelling atmosphere as the base game.
One thing I always though was missing was the use of air vehicles/gadgets such as drones and maybe some light helicopters. If radar and and other more exotic types of temporal tech is possible to develop, then making some air-based stuff is entirely reasonable.
Yeah, the C&C type of grab rescources and churn out troops to endlessly throw against enemies is a bit tiresome and vastly inferior compared to the true tactical aspect of OW. It would be good to see another game that did that. (the upcoming Battletech might do something to fill that gap..?).

In short: If an OW 2 was made (and had the same kind of original aspect) I would buy it in an instant! :)
With the exception of John MacMillan and Burlak, occasionally some other mission specific characters, permadeath is a very real threat too. I love that you get rewarded for keeping certain characters alive by getting to hear unique dialogue and interactions that you wouldn't get normally. I felt so connected to Cyrus Parker and Bobby Brandon by the end of the game just because they'd been around so long.
If there is a sequel I'd love to see it kept as close to the Original with all of those things as possible, including the graphics. Just 2018 tech versions of it, something along the lines of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IbHeFaOpJw or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5FT6S1WhpM
I had a particular love for the characters of Frank, Tim, Joan and Lucy, (in addition to John and Burlak) and it was great to help them advance through the campaign and make it to the end in one piece. The playful banter of Frank in particlar was always a treat....he had some cracking *one-liners*.
