However, I will say I absolutely loved the story to DMS, and actually liked how linear it was. (Which I have seen others complain about.) As for the length, I will admit I do want more, a lot more in fact, but thinking about it now it does seem a lil short, but I really don't mind that.
Anywho, even with it's many shortcomings, I still play this game and rather love it, so all in all I think they did a good job with it.
I enjoyed the game, but I'm biased: I like Shadowrun in general. Essentially, the game is playable, few bugs (I did not encounter any), and has a decent story. No, its not going to be another Xcom: EU (in terms of combat), but they never said that it would be. The RPG elements were okay and could have been better.
The only thing that worries me for the future is that the team who worked on Shadowrun Returns has gone on to create a new game, with a smaller team to work on DLC and content for Shadowrun Returns.
Firstly, the difficulty settings seriously need tweaking. Instead of playing on normal, increase the difficulty to the maximum level.
Secondly, the campaign is too short and completely linear. The developers know this and are currently working on a large campaign which has been so far referred to by them as the "Berlin Campaign". This may be released free, but will probably be a DLC purchase.
Thirdly, XCOM Enemy Unknown is not tactical, but a dumbed downed remake of XCOM UFO Defense, but with much of the complexity removed and the difficulty decreased dramatically, even on the hardest difficulty setting with Iron Man enabled. If you are looking for a real tactical challenge for RPGs, there is a game called Xenonauts currently in its beta and is a remake of XCOM UFO Defense. It will utterly crush you with its tactical complexity and difficulty—Dying has never been so fun.
1. The price, it's really cheap considering what you get.
2. The editor, not many companies do give their community a editor capable of extending game content like this one.
Overall it's a game I'm happy I have bought and even if it could have been done better, I say we need more of these kind of RPGs. 7 out of 10 I say plus some bonus points for the editor potential.
But, i must admit that i agree with you on some points, ie the icons making it too easy to find a plot item, or the WP.
HBS made choices with their tools and did not (have the time to ?) implement many things from the editor that could have changed many aspects.
UGC creator have their own way to do things, and getting something in some modules won't be as easy as in DMS.
For instance, in my upcoming-yes-it-is campain, i choosed to place no way points. Players will have to search for items in the decor and to rely on their detective talent to find some places.
Some items that give "plot things" wont be interactable until you have taken a certain action (ie chosed a proper conversation branch or activated another trigger). Not interactable means that they will have no icon, so the player will not notice something special unless "he does the right things" and/or he has received a quest linked to the item.
BUT, the problem is that many more things can be done to hide more guys, items or locations to the player...and this is not allways simple to implement and certainly upper time-consuming.
So, choices are to be made.
You want an UGC with some surprises ? It will take 1-2 months to make a good (short/average) story. You want a fully totally flexable UGC in which all the decisions you make have an impact ? It will take 6 months, provided that side-effects or bugs don't mess the whole thing...
Well, I played the campaign yesterday from start to end non-stop within 15 hours and I have to admint: I love this drek!
Yes, it's not a great game (yet), maybe it's not a "good" game for most people. But I'd give it a 7.5/10 if I had to review it, and if the Berlin campaign turns out to be good, too, an 8/10. The soundtrack is superb and the story is very immerging (if that is a word ^^). the mechanics are q bit clumpsy, but I got used to it quite fast.
Yeah, it's short for a typical RPG. I would have been happy to see more, but I was pleased with what I got. It seems reasonable for the price. I'm also getting good mileage from the UGC. There's a fair amount of it!

Don't let anyone sell you on the UGC getting any better, there are times when literally zero people are playing this game on steam, down from a high near 30k (all the kickstarters on launch day) because it's a 10 hour game with no replay value.
Look I know you are answering a question here but I've seen post after post by you running this game down. My response to the quoted comment above is simply this. Most people can't live on the Steam website 24-7. We have lives & have to make a living to pay bills. There are tons of games on here that would show a similar dive in the ammount of activity on those graphs. If you don't dig the game that is your right to have your own opinion. However, you honestly need to stop trolling & find another game that suits your personal taste better. There are alot of games on here I'm not into but I'm not on their discussion panels slinging crap at the game & its developers all day long. Find something YOU like & let the rest of us enjoy the game. Problem solved. Have a good one.
Says the person who's played the game for 60 hours on record...
