Weapon range?
Ok first of all - not a rant - I love this game to bits!!! It is simplified in some areas but the hell with it...

My problem is with guns - I went through the list and I see each gun has a range 19 showing on my screen? I mean WTF? Whats the point of using rifles or pistols then?

Can anyone explain if I am missing something here? I play with a shotgun and still hit hard at long range?:bff:

yeah but the point is if AK has range 19 thenb pistol should be 10-11 and shotgun maybe 7-8
If I can do some sexy criticals with a shotgun from across the room then there is no point using other stuff ;-)
Agreed

There is a notable difference in accuracy between the different ranged weapons.

As to why all guns display the same range: I have no clue. Perhaps the concept is "maximum" range. But if they are all the same I don't see the point of even displaying it.

Shotgun lockdown isn't that great after Knee Cap was slaughtered.

I think the range just indicates that all the guns will be able to hit from any range available. There are no huge maps in the main campaign (except perhaps the early street fight with the gang), the biggest distance would usually be a long hallway, some courtyards.

The true difference in the guns is the accuracy fall-off over range. At longer distances shotguns will have pathetic accuracy, as they should. Rifles are best, then pistols, then SMG, then shotgun. Up close it is not noticeable. But at extreme ranges hit percentage is very small so gunfights will effectively be limited to a certain range which is less than the given range on the weapons. Therefore no need to differentiate ranges.

Shotguns and Pistols should have similar ranges, and the range difference between SMG's and Rifles - well the maps mostly aren't large enough for that to matter.

And its a matter of balance - if the pistols have low ranges then what's the point of using pistols?

The real differences are in the special abilities.

Pistol accuracy does not drop off over distance like shotgun does. Pulling example numbers from experience, (early play enemies with 3 ranged combat skill) from something like 2 grid squares, pistol and shotgun may both be 90-99%. But across a room (8-9 grid squares) the shotgun drops to 30-40% while pistol is still 70-80%. Skill obviously compensates somewhat but that is the true effect of range.
You will never be out of range in the game no matter the gun, so the range numbers are meaningless. That is why they are not differentiated.

Shot spreads out erratically after a certain distance(though often not as short as a distance as people mistakenly believe), and shotgun barrels are typically not rifled so they will not have that much distance even with slugs. There are rifled shotguns but you have to use slugs to get any distance with them, the distance is HORRIBLE with shot in rifled barrels I'm told.

Pistols that aren't like 200 years old ALL have rifling in them and you don't have to worry about shot spreading out, so they WILL be more accurate and have a longer range than a smooth bore shotgun using shot.
