Shadowrun Returns

Shadowrun Returns

Lack of open/sandbox world KILLS this game
I loved the original Shadowrun games on the SNES and Genesis and I love the concept of Shadowrun in itself. The problem with this game after playing it for several hours is gamers nowadays expect RPG's to have that open-world feel to it where they can branch off in any direction at any time to have that random living world immersion that we get from so many games today where you could play through the game a second time in a different way and have a whole different experience. I guess we're a bit spoiled but that's a good progression in games that should only get better. I understand this game didn't break my wallet in purchasing it and that it's open to the community for modding and DLC but I just don't see how the community will be able to mod this game to give it that open-world/sandbox feel. I hope I'm proven wrong and this game gets a huge boost in replay value.

Remember in the Genesis version how you could go back to the Fixer and sign up for an unlimited number of Shadowruns and they would be different every time? How that fundamental concept from a Sega Genesis game didn't make it here is beyond comprehension. I just really hope this game becomes more than what feels like a web-based browser game with pretty backgrounds and one direction to go where you simply click icons along the way.

The Dead Man Switch story is just that. A story. A story that shows the capability of SRR and what can be done. Give SRR a chance to get a decent modding community, and it will be one of the best CRPGs of the year.

This. I don't know why people are making such a big deal about the first campaign. Yeah, I wish it was a bit longer until more UGC comes out, but holy-crap. So much hate for $15-20 spent. There's $50+ games that have about the same (or less) amount of gameplay, but with none or limited replay value.

edit: i suck at proofreading.

hells yeah. people getting major upset because this isn't the snes game or the genesis game need to realize Shadowrun existed outside of videogaming for a long time, and that the console games were fairly uncharacteristic for the franchise. Lots of developmental freedoms, and lets not even mention the Xbox360 game. Anyone coming here from there is going to get the wrong impression. If you came here looking for a sequel to anything you've played in the past, you're barking up the wrong tree. Sorry.

What this is, is a Shadowrun game. A. Shadowrun game. It's a box, with dice, some figures, some slips of paper, a rulebook, and a campaign pamphlet. More campaigns are on the way, some free, and some pay. I'm ok with that, honestly.
I miss playing my decker and being able to jack in to any com and steal tec for cash. Anytime, anywhere however long as I liked. Level four and up data for big money for cyber upgrades and better software to fight nodes and get more high level data. SRR has one path and no freedom to go and do as you like, only what was written and scripted. I know there are people trying to recreate the snes and genesis version but there not going to be able to copy what was already done ( 18 years ago ) . We are now 18 years later and they make a pc game with no save feature and no freedoms aside from an editor. Did we take a few steps back? How is it the 18 year old console games offer more bang for your buck then this corridor scripted game?

I did my research before buying this, however it never said you would be guided down a road with no other options and be limited to what you can INTERACT with ie things to click before nothing is left on the map till next map. Last it never mentions the new spin they took on saving. WHY? why are we doing this after so many failed attempts at checkpoint saving? Dead Island rings a bell but there it saves on EXIT here in SRR it doesn't it reverts to last checkpoint, rage.

I'm sad that my genesis version allows me to play and replay the same story with tons of side quests and options to rack in tons of money and suit out runner crews as I see fit till my hearts content while SRR only offers what is created and placed by the campaign editor.

You know what this boils down to?

Old video game Shadowrun players Snes / Genesis.
AND
Shadowrun Role play with a DM.

What we got here is a more inclined role play style game then our older console games back in the 90s. I was mislead as I was looking forward to a reboot of the old games but instead was handed a scripted game with limited play options (and a save feature).

Don't get me wrong it's really great work but I miss being able to do matrix runs till I got bored and that was rare mind you.
What Xlockeed said - to me It's meant to be like playing Shadowrun - you know where a GM guides you through a story. I'm loving it :D
i came to the conclusion it's a tablet game. with that assumption - really enjoyed it.
