Shadowrun Returns

Shadowrun Returns

I'm from Seattle, this is legit.
Once Frasier stopped coming out with new episodes I have felt my hometown's place in the entertainment world dwindle. When the Seattle Sonics (NBA) left, another nail in our coffin.

So, to start playing a game based in Seattle was a pleasent surprise. To see that certain Emerald City stereotypes made it into the game is absolutely awsome! For those who don't know, people from Bellevue tend to be rich snobs, just like the bartender said. Redmond is a bit further away from Seattle than the game projects, but that is fine. I have also seen a few pieces of architecture that are subliminally iconic of Seattle.

I ask that any Seattlite playing this game add any Seattlisms they find to this thread.

Snohomish, backwoods hickville. Yep, they did their homework!

But seriously, Pikes Place was great to see.
But umbrellas? Seriously?

Considering the rain in the Shadowrun world is partially acidic, you'd be nuts *not* to use one.

Pike Place Market makes an appearance. Boeing is one of the few real corps to get a mention. Bellevue and Redmond are mentioned.

One of the pre-release wallpapers had the Smith Tower in it, in front of the Renraku arcology..

I loved the Sega Genesis Shadowrun game, but the geography made no sense; I seem to remember that you had to mirror the map in order to get Puyallup and Redmond in the right places relative to Seattle.

Speaking of references, I've coincidentally been reading William Gibson's "Sprawl" books (Neuromancer, et al), which are pretty much the inception of the cyberpunk genre of fiction. It's interesting just how heavily and directly Shadowrun borrows from those - "spawl", "simsense", "the matrix / cyberspace", "jacking in", "nuyen", "coffin motel/hotel", etc. all came from the Sprawl stories.

Yeah these elements sort of became indicative of the cyberpunk genre. R. Talsorian's Cyberpunk 2020 is the more direct pnp answer to Gibson's work. Jordan Weisman and L. Ross Babcock then took that and added the fantasy elements creating Shadowrun.

I agree.

Seatle was the choice for the intial setting and seemed appropriate based on the number of actual corps there now.

It's also where most PnP campaigns take place, since it's the largest, densest city still left standing in the Americas in the Sixth World, and headquarters to a few of the world's largest MegaCorps.

That and I think that the guys who wrote the rule books were from Seattle.

Thery were living in Chicago at the time, which is why Chicago goes to ♥♥♥♥ so hard. They chose Seattle as the setting because it was a major metro but not well known at the time. They didn't know Starbucks and Grunge and Microsoft and Twilight and all this stuff would come along and make it super-famous.
I heard Gibson got pretty butthurt about Shadowrun but I think that's because he really dislikes fantasy and wanted to whine about there being elves in his precious scifi.

Don't get me wrong I LOVE nueromancer but he seems like another..... the crap was the guy who made Watchmen and such and had to whine about any deviantions from the source material?

From what I can tell from the various games, it probably also has to do with the significant presence of native American culture and wilderness areas in the Pacific Northwest. The region offers a great mix of urban and natural settings within a very short distance, which makes for a compelling setting for the mix of magic and technology in Shadowrun's universe.

In terms of pop culture yes. Seattle is and was however a major port for trade with Asia and had a mix of economic woes while simultaniously seeing rapid growth in new technology industries (think Microsoft) which makes it a perfect local.

I agree! The sc-fi totem poles are a great touch. Just look at the Seattle Seahawks logo and and you can see the deep influence Native American culture has on the Seattle region. The city is named after a Native American chief. I have so much nastolgia from playing this game.
They chose Seatlle as the main place for Shadowrun because everybody on Earth knows about New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, etc. Seattle is a place not very much used for fictions so the Shadowrun authors felt they could arrange the scenery freely.
Being an Amer-Indian growing up in the Pacific Northwest (near Olympia) I've always loved the setting and lore of ShadowRun. With the mention of the different tribes, from the Salish to the Makah getting honorable mentions in the writings.

I sincerely hope that Pike Market's sign will stand the test of time and still be standing when the MegaCorps come in and take over. If you think about it, we're well on the way. Amazon, Micro$oft, CostCo, Boeing. All started right in the Emerald City.

The Genesis game will always be my favorite as it introduced me to the setting. SR:R has wonderful writing, I just wish it had a more open world format to roam and get into random adventures.

I went to Olympia High School for a year, so we've probably walked the same streets at some point or another. I know what you mean about the Pike Place Market sign, I hope that thing stays past eternity. This is my first experience with Shadowrun, but the game seems really cool and I love the setting. I can't wait to visit home in a few weeks and I plan to hunt down some of the refferences if I get a chance.
So do you have trolls in Seatle? :dssmallbird:
