What the drek?
What's with everyone using the word "drek" over ♥♥♥♥ and ♥♥♥♥?

Feels like I'm playing a censored version. Actual profanity would serve the dialogue so much more.

It's a shadowrun thing.

Drek n., x. (vul) A common scatological curse word, as in "bulldrek;" adj. drekky.
Krathicus Jul 25, 2013 @ 4:33pm
Shadowrun slang

The 80's, that's why. And you're welcome to have as much 80's as you like, we brought enough to share with all the younger people.

A lot of cyberpunk/futuristic stuff make up their own curse words to avoid censorship. Judge Dredd does it, Batman beyond does it, Red Dwarf does it. It's pretty common and I imagine that all these made up words used in the game come from Shadowrun lore itself.

All it makes me think is how much I want to rewatch Battlestar Frakking Galactica.

It was used in Red Dwarf as well if anyone is from the UK

It's the future. Why must people talk exactly like we did in 1995?

Just imagine people in the 1940s complaining that someone dared write unusual dialogue for stories set in the far-off, bizarre future of the YEEEAAAAAARRRRR 2000. Does that seem sensible or just hilarious of a complaint to make?

Battlestar Galactica, too. And even in more recent things--Firefly used "shiny" and Chinese cursing for the same purposes. It's part of creating a unique world with a distinct flavor.

I'm working on a scifi story that uses "grot" as a perjorative, because it's got that nice, grungy, guttural roll to it.

Personally, I subscribe to the idea that anyone who might complain about this sort of thing is basically saying "But I'm out of ear-shot of mummy and daddy-kins, I wanna curse a bunch *Pout*" Also: The 80's

Some of the older shadowrun books actually have a table of shadowrun curse words :D The new book has one too but its not as good :v
