Good Shadowrun novels?
I pre-ordered the game and since I only played the SNES version and never played the tabletop game, I may be missing on some lore and stuff.
I was wondering if any of the fans can recomend some of the Shadowrun novels, I saw that there are quite a few of them https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Shadowrun_books#Novels but I am not sure which of them (if any) are good and where should a "noob" in the series start :)

I am sorry if this is not really related to the game, but this seemed like a good place to ask.

I've read the secret of power trilogy and like it. I know I've read some other one involving a dwarf with guns, but I can't remember the name.

Changeling and Burning Bright are both fantastic. Changeling is about a smart kid who suffers from metaing into a troll. Burning Bright is about the major events in Chicago in 2055 starring a cool mage.

someone else suggested Born to Run in another thread, and after reading it myself I would have to do so as well, its a very good read, and it nicely shows just about everything you could ask about when it comes to shadowrun, from the trix to learning magic from the start as well as alot of other things, go find a copy and give it a look over, sadly most of the others I have read have been long enough ago that I can't match story to title anymore /laugh
Yeah, Born To Run is a great introduction to the setting and the world of shadowrunning. It's an older one so you might have trouble finding a copy - I lucked out and found one at the local library. Sadly, it's the first part of a trilogy and while I bought part 3 a while ago ("Fallen Angels", I didn't realise it was part 3 of a trilogy until I got it home so I've never read it) I haven't been able to find part 2, "Poison Agendas", anywhere.

EDIT: Another good source for fluff is the Shadowrun Primer that Harebrained Schemes put up on their website a while back - can't remember if they put it there during or just after the Kickstarter but it was around then.

Add "Fade to Black" to this list a very good read, I have some others but can't think of them right now ;-p

You could try 'Into the Shadows'. I'm suggesting it because it was several stories, involving a lot of characters, and you get a broader picture of the world.

"Into the Shadows", at least for me, seemed to be a good starting place as it gave a pretty broad view of the "Shdowrun world" plus a glossary in the back. Currently reading the "Secrets of Power" trilogy.

I just wish they'd give these novels a re-print. Where I am, all of them are out-of-print and some people on Amazon are selling them for as much as $50...

I recommend the ones by Nigel Findley. I was reading the William Gibson books and came across these ShadowRun novels written by Mr. Findley. I thought they were well written and very enjoyable reads.

Oddly enough I still have mine in a box about 15 ft from me, and it appears I have all but Into The Shadows... and the 2 newer series by WizKids and Catalyst.

I recall liking almost all of them when I last read them, but then I was actively playing the RPG also, so.....

I know that isn't much help, but I would highly recommend opening up a search window (or even your <GASP!!> paper copy of the Yellow Pages) and looking up all your local used bookstores. I know of 4 within about 10 miles of me, and frequently go to 3 of them, and all of them have a few SR novels on their shelves. Maybe shops near you will be holding a treasure for you. Maybe not even SR novels!! I got a great Kipling (Departmental Ditties and Barrack Room Ballads) copy from 1913 or so. Smells AWESOME when you open up those old pages to "Young British Soldier"...

Wow.

Sorry guys.

Ummmmmmmm... happy hunting for SR books!! :D

I never really liked the Novels except for a few, instead i would recommend reading the Source Books, they allways make a good read and are in most cases far better written imo.

All of them

Striper Assassin was good too

ALL OF THEM. As well as the newer ones, that are supposed to bridge the gap between the old setting and the new one! Well, not setting, so much as updating the timeline! I only wish that they had continued writing new novels, as they were off to a great start!

Often they have them on Amazon, offered by used bookshops that have a distribution deal with Amazon. You can often get them at a really cheap price... until the shipping comes up, so you should only buy them 1-3 books at a time!

Honestly, they are all pretty good. Check out Amazon or e-bay. Good, easy, fun reads. Still break one out every once and a while.

Hmm, it's been such a long time since I read the novels. I seem to remember that all of them were worth reading, but can't tell which ones were better than the others. I agree that the source books are very good too. I didn't always love FASA's rules systems, but their settings always blew me away.
