Shadowrun Returns

What is Shadowrun SNES like?
Are there any similarities to Shadowrun Returns? Both seem to be isometric, but Shadowrun SNES has some form of open world.

I assume you're referring to the original 1990s SNES game, not the reboot.

Both games are isometric, and are based on the same underlying pen-and-paper game, so there are similarities. Both are set in 2050s Seattle, both require gaining karma to increase skills, both let you hire other runners, purchase armor and weapons and spells, etc.

SNES is more open-ended and less linear. It isn't open world in the same way that Skyrim is, but you can freely move back and forth between different regions in the city. It also has respawning, random enemies, and a lot more grinding than SRR does. Without spoiling too much, the storylines are different but both good... both have strong noir elements, a central mystery to investigate, and tie into some interesting overarching plots.

I loved the SNES game growing up, but it's a bit hard to play today. The targeting system is really wonky (you essentially control a mouse cursor with your gamepad), the matrix is lackluster, and you need a high tolerance for grinding. The setting and flavor are great, though, and the music holds up really well.

I played the Sega SR as a kid, and it terrified me. It was different, dark, adult, and complex. It wasn't Mario or DOnkey Kong, which were the games I used to play.

The Snes version has Jake as the main character, by the way.

How about an HD remake of the SNES game? I'd love a free-roam cyberpunk game..

I'd like to Imagine a DreamWeb-esque top-down action rpg game, maybe even an open world Deus Ex style of game.. Or the Skyrim of Cyberpunk games.

So much potential for this type of setting! Really hard to think of unique art direction for it though.

IMHO, SNES Shadowrun is a waste of time, the SEGA one is far superior....So many hours spent in the matrix, jacking data and selling it to Errascoe (I think that was his name, the fixer downtown who has a terminal right outside his door). And I am a person who generally feels that SNES is a superior system in all respects, this being the only game I think SEGA was able to do better. Dont get me wrong, love the sega RPG and strategy classics (Shining Force, Phantasy Star, etc...) but always liked SNES more. Except when it comes to Shadowrun.

What are the differences?

i'm afraid there's no simple answer to that... they are 2 different games.

imo, snes game was little boring because main character was meant to be... all-in-one-character. decker, shaman, team leader, etc., and that doesn't add to game's rpg value. doesn't feel like shadowrunner at all, but hero protagonist you get in action games. in sega game you get to choose between samurai, decker and shaman (gator) from the start.

and cyberspace in sega game used to be absolutely smashing... like a game inside a game.

Both (SNES/SEGA) are fun. SNES version has a kinda 'point and click' adventure feel to it and you have to 'interrogate' NPCs to find clues/keywords etc. SEGA version is more about shadowrunning and is more complex in regard to leveling up/distributing karma points. Grinding in SNES involves defeating enemies, grinding in SEGA involves doing jobs (killing enemies still gives a little boost to karma but shadowruns are the quickest way to level and gain cash).

If you enjoy old school games then give both a try.

If this was a hidden reference to Snow Crash. You win the Internets.

I wish the newer ones were more open and nonlinear, still great games, I haven't started dragonfall, still in the midst of beating the first one, the SNES version was really cool back in the day, something new for the system, I enjoyed it, but I wasn't that into it, I recently got it on emulator and enjoyed it.
