Shadowrun Returns

Shadowrun Returns

How similar are the rules in this game to the 5th edition tabletop rules?
Basically just wondering, from people who know both, are the rules in this game a faithful reproduction of the 5th edition tabletop rules? Like if I understand this system is it a pretty close match to the tabletop game? Is it entirely different? Is it close but just different enough to really annoy the hell out of me if I were to learn the tabletop rules?

Overall, I'd say that given the way the game behaves SR:R is more heavily influenced by the 2nd/3rd edition rules. The 5th edition of Shadowrun added some new mechanics (like capping your skill checks with your equipment's modifiers), so it doesn't seem like SR:R behaves like that version's combat. I don't think that you'll notice much overlap between the two games at all, though.

Shadowrun Returns focuses almost entirely on combat mechanics and excludes most of the characters' skills that are found in the tabletop version of Shadowrun. Some of the staples of the PnP RPG's combat (i.e. stealth, cover, initiative, etc...) also don't seem to be represented the same way. Combat does seem to be much more streamlined than in the tabletop version, since the overall skill-check mechanics in Shadowrun Returns are mostly hidden from the player.

P.S.
I find that running 5th edition is already enough to "annoy the hell out of me" by itself. The 4th Edition and 20th anniversary rules (sort of edition 4.5) were not bad... but Catalyst really took a step backwards with the 5th edition (IMO).

Thanks for the response. Regarding your PS, how so?
I think the big thing for me is that the editing of the main rulebook seems to require to much skipping around to be a very coherent read. Also, I don't understand why some of the new rules were deemed necessary. The new edition seems to be much more gear-centric with things like equipment caps of your skills or deckers breaching the security on their opponents network-equipped tools (make sure your hazmat suit's wi-fi is turned off).

It may get better in the future if Catalyst releases more material to round out the rules (I'm mainly waiting for an updated magic sourcebook). Right now, the core rulebooks of the 5th edition consists solely of the 5th edition book and the combat book (Run & Gun), it just seems a little too sparse.

Still, I imagine that learning the previous versions has clouded my opinion on the subject soI'd recommend downloading the quick-start rules from the Shadowrun Tabletop Site[www.shadowruntabletop.com]. Hopefully, you're experience will be better than mine.
Interesting, thanks.
