Steam vs GOG version
I know the GOG version is DRM-free, and the Steam version has workshop mods (which can still work with GOG with some fiddling.) I generally preferred GOG over Steam, but now the Steam version is selling at 75% off. I'm wondering if there are any benefits to getting the Steam version over GOG version. Thanks.

Specifically regarding UGC mods, Steam has a few advantages:
* All your Steam mods are automatically kept up-to-date, without you needing to manually check the NexusMods site.
* Most authors update their Steam mods more frequently and more quickly.

Steam also has cloud saves, which can be nice if you want to play on multiple computers and/or backup your saves. Other than those things, they're pretty similar.

Thanks. I think I'll get it from GOG when it's 75% or 80% off at GOG. Personally I prefer having games on GOG over on Steam.

Sounds like someone was hired to slam Steam

haha exactly my thought too.

Cloud saves + trading cards + integrated steam workshop + automatic mod updates + automatic game updates make the steam version clearly better IMO.

I prefer buying games on GOG because:

"When you buy from GOG, you are buying the game, whereas when you buy from Steam, you are buying Valve’s permission to play that game." - http://dailyuw.com/archive/2014/01/06/arts-leisure/not-steam-vs-gogcom

I "lease" a game on Steam (because that is what it really is: you really do not own the games you paid for on Steam) when GOG does not sell it.

When I buy something on GOG, I actually own it. It's mine to keep and use, forever. GOG cannot take the game from me after I buy and download it. GOG cannot stop/block me from playing the game I own. On the other hand, Steam can always suspend/block my account and stop me from using the products I've already paid for. That may not matter to you, but it matters to me.

i have games on Steam, Origin and GOG. its just where you want your games or who has the better price. myself i like steam more but who knows once GOG galaxy comes out
Yep...
However I will pay less on Steam for both the original and the DLC...$9.32 to be exact because I sold something.

Unless you are worried Steam will go out of business and abandon your game?
By that same token, you may burn a disc with your GOG games and when you try to load them in a year or three find a heap of issues that new OS or vid drivers caused.

Nothing is forever, not even in the digital world.

While I agree with your decision, the way you said it does make it sound like you're being paid.

"It's 25% of the price, why should I buy it here?" ... "You know, I'll just buy it elsewhere."

Steam won't go out of business - BUT, it is not uncommon for Steam to ban or block users, and (I've read/heard) sometimes for miniscule or no reason. And when it happens, Steam won't even bother let users know whey they are suspended or blocked. Steam holds all the powers. Based on what I've read, Steam is way more likely to ban someone than the someone loses everything on a disc.

The thing with GOG is: once I pay for the games and download them, it's mine. GOG can't block or suspend me and stop me from playing those games - because all GOG games work without a client.

Anyway, it's all about personal preferences. As I've said, that consideration may not matter to you, but it matters to me. I was thinking about getting Shadowrun Return from Steam because Steam is selling it at 75% off, and I've been thinking about buying it for awhile. Steam also has Workshop mods. So I felt an impulse to just get it on Steam. HOWEVER, when I calmed down and thought about it: I have always prefer getting my games on GOG. When a game is available on BOTH Steam and GOG, I ALWAYS get it on GOG instead of Steam. Also, GOG's discounts are actually deeper than Steam. So, if GOG does not sell Shadowrun Return at 75% now, most likely it will soon. So I decided to wait for a discount on GOG. I'll still buy from Steam because GOG has a small catalog. But if a game gives me the choice between the two, I prefer GOG.

"I've read/heard..." Speaks volumes. No direct knowledge but you heard something online from a pal.
Go away, your troll is showing.

Yeah, whatever. It's pointless to argue with a Steam fanboy. I made my decision. This discussion is concluded. Nothing else can be gained from this discussion, so I move on. Bye.

The people who have lost accounts have lost them for a reason. Mainly with Reversing transactions through your credit card company, which steam does not take to kindly too. Scamming and fraud or selling your account I believe can also have your account closed.
If you reversed a transaction over at GOG pretty sure your account would be closed as well.

I will say one thing though. Steam does have atrocious customer service. Thankfully I have not had to use it much, but you get a huge run around and long waits for a response.

hm never heard of gog galaxy until i read this thread. It actually looks promising, Of course people would rather have drm free games if given the option. But in the end we are arguing over digital content, what if the servers go down and you can't download any of the games you bought, drm becomes moot at that point. Right now theres no way i can download and backup all my games i would need a petabyte drive, no matter the platform we are all still at the mercy of the cloud.
