Level design is awful, by the end of the game I could intuitively know where the enemies would ambush me or likely be positioned. Misclicks for movement/attack could've been fixed easily by giving attacks a specific hotkey and movement a hotkey...it's poor archaic game design, easily fixed with smart ideas. On top of that map design is uninspired with sidequests not far apart, and scattered items that allow you to avoid fights. Also forcing each individual character to hit the exit button for an area is again archaic and poor design. It feels like I'm literally wasting my time moving all the characters to a door and clicking it for them to move on.
Forcing a weapon upon you on endgame is a bad game decision, they could've allowed players to choose a specific gun with that mod, and for spellcasters a spell that could be used on ghost forms. On top of that the end is buggy, one time an enemy became untargetable because it died spawning a ghost and another enemy ran on top of it forcing a level restart.
This is a C game at best, but the big problem is it lacks creativity, I can enjoy a B or C game like EDF, Kingdom, Curious Expedition, but those games bring new innovative ideas to the table. The only good thing is the ending wraps up a rather mediocre story, and getting officer Klusky fired is rather satisfying.
EDIT: I love the Returns as it is, personally.
I LOVED the Sega Genesis Shadowrun back in the day and would have been overjoyed for a modern update that brought graphics up to par and fixed a bit of the decking that got tedious. Sadly, this is not that game, it starts slow, stays slow and feels far too constrained in what you can do. No exploration, limited weapons, dull story...thats 3 strikes in an rpg and yet Im grinding on further hoping it gets less boring.
The game fails at explaining any of the mechanics behind the curtain (the stats influence on combat for instance, the rolls being made etc....That's a little bit sloppy for a fully fleshed out system), different builds felt boring, unimportant and downright depressing (my first playthrough was with a gun-wielding mage. I learned never to bother with guns again).
The few etiquettes I've seen making any sort of impact offered little in the end.
As a learning experience SR:R was a good thing for HBS and from what I've heard the next two games were much better than SR:R.
Disclaimer: I've backed the game and played it through right after launch. There may have been some patches that has fixed some of my issues with the game. But from a story so linear I can't find the will to complete it again just to check.
This game held me back from purchasing any of the other two Shadowrun games by HBS.
It's whether not weather (sry couldn't stop the grammar nazi from emerging). And it is not a bad game as such. But it is best enjoyed with the understanding of what the game offers IMO.
A story with very little C&C, some bad sounds and a lot of (what i felt to be weird) combat. On a string. For the current price I wouldn't recommend it unless you were a P&P Shadowrun player who might like the atmosphere.
But for the amount of money raised on Kickstarter and the implementation of workshop/mod support and a editor for doing such, is pretty good.
But the game feels kind of lacking in several areas IMO.
The game definetly lacks some aspects, but let's remember that this was the first game of an indie game company. It's bound to have some flaws. Look at what they've accomplished now. They have Golem Arcana, SR:HK, and a new Battletech game on it's way!
Indeed. I think for their budget and this being their first endeavour into the Unity Engine it's fairly well done. But comparing to other CRPG's out there I felt more like playing an adventure game with combat mechanics than a CRPG.
But I'm not dismissing their efforts here. Only being a bit spoiled and hoped for more.
Perhaps I should give it a go again. I played it right after release.
And yeah about misspelling. I keep doing that too. Whether, wether etc. So don't worry about my correction earlier. It was all in good spirit and not an attempt to play a smart-"rear-end".
