Online only?

Starting for the first time, but the game doesn't seem to start unless I let it connect to the net, wth?

nope no need to be online to play

it only checks in some menu what is available on the net (mods for install etc.)

Thanks for the reply. Really strange, mine just sits there with a black screen, stalling (hourglass) until it can connect online. I've got no mods installed, as this is my first time playing/starting the game. It must be the newest version of the game, just downloaded and install off Steam in the last 12 hours.

Are you sure rentier7419? I've checked this several times, it absolutely does not work without connecting to the internet. I'd like to know why this is happening, there's no notification on the Steam sales page.

1: Check verifying files via steam. 2: is the partition in which the game files are located, connected all the way. 3: Many steam games have off line options. check your settings to included off line usage. so there is my trouble shooting list from other experiences on steam. hope it helps.

Thanks Bahadur KGWP! Yes, my Steam games are on D:\Steam Games. Afaik, many games have issues with being on the C:\Program Files directory, specifically UAC.

I can start any other 'nonOnline only' Steam game and don't get a request to access the net. Shadowrun Returns starts as 1024x768? window which remains black/stalled if not given net access. I really don't see the need to verify files if the game is working. An easy way to see what I mean is if you have a fire wall program like zone alarm. Just set it to no access and it won't work, well at least mine won't.

There are quite a lot of games that require you to be at last online once when starting them for the first time

and to be able to play anything offline you have to actually disable any setting that requires an online-connection in the settings.

This isn't once, it's everytime you start a game, it 'requires' connect.

The problem is, this is hidden from the potiental customer. Afaik international consumer protection laws requre developers to list if their game requires a constant connection to the net.

There is no reason, this game forces you to connect online each time you start a game. It's not even a multiplayer game. Wth are the developers doing? It's misleading at the very least.

Just installed HK and requires connecting or it won't work either.

actually you don't need a connection at all. I was without internet access for 2 weeks playing this game. you have another issue, it's nothing to do with internet connection.

How does that work exactly? I've got at least 200 games on Steam, none of them do this, unless they are an online game.

My game will not start without giving access to internet. Are you saying I need to go Offline with Steam and disable my internet, EACH time I play this game...and that should be cool?

not at all, i'm saying internet is not your problem and you are looking at the wrong thing.


If you have internet then there should be no problem, if you don't there should be no problem, if there should be no problem in either situation then the problem is somewhere else.

Well then you don't understand, it is forcing the conection to the internet or the game does not start. As I stated way back at the beginning. I've even given examples of how you can see for yourself. No idea why you need me to repeat myself.

Clearly you aren't listening, the game requires connection to the internet to play. Sorry, you telling me it doesn't isn't, doesn't help. I can clearly test it, if I don't let it connect through the firewall it doesn't start. As mentioned before.

You are just speaking in gerneralizations, which are clearly wrong. There's no way I have some different version from you, I've downloaded both from Steam in the last week. Not only did Shadowrun Returns behave this way so is HK, which I just finished Vox Populi.

Clearly you aren't listening, as the game does not require such a thing, so the game is not the problem. The problem is something else.

you are Accusing the game of needing an internet connection to work. You do not need an internet connection to play it, Pretty much every other person whom replied to this thread confirmed such.

Ok, litterally just now, I pulled my internet cable from the PC, and started the game, just to see for myself, it started just fine throwing a warning about steam cloud potentially getting unsynced due to having no internet connection, game started and ran fine though. Game does not require internet at all beyond downloading it.
