How do you use riggers?

I'm playing HK. I took the rigger NPC with me, but I couldn't figure out how to make his drone do stuff, and my himself he's basically useless.

Use his rigging module to switch the Drone's mode, each drone that he has active costs one AP.

Is the rigging module the weapon option he has other than pistol? Because when I clicked it, all I got was options to buff his drone.

Those Drone buffs are attack or defense options requiring AP. Much like summoning creatures when using the drones.
