Ranged AND Melee SS build
Is there anyway in making a decent guy who can defend himself in melee and shooting?

I was about to try my first "figther" PC (never used basic classes anyway) after playing a mage and an Adept

It's very possible, especially with cyberware. You'll be spending a lot of karma and money though.

+1. Truthfully the game isn't so hard that you can't get away with mixing most things with most things as long as you don't bite off too much and know how to play your build, but in the late game you'll want 6-7 minimum in whatever stat governs the accuracy of how you deal damage. That means your gunfighter will want 6-7 Quickness and Ranged Combat, and your melee fighter will want 6-7 Strength and Close-Range combat simply in order to hit instead of miss.

A melee fighter really should have 6 body by the endgame, and I usually prefer 7+. So already we've spent a LOT of Karma on basis offensive capabilities. Where this becomes difficult is that you won't have much karma left over for specialized gun skills, swordfighting and/or melee combat, without which you won't be able to use the moves that make those fighting styles shine. Most great gunfighters use 2+ types of guns including something AoE (shotguns, submachine guns) and something for precision (pistols, or rifles for range). Most melee fighters use unarmed combat OR swordsmanship. Very simply, you'll be pretty tight on Karma for most of the game, but you mighth be able to mix your melee skill of choice with one gun - I'd go pistols for speed and damage. Using shotguns only can put you in a situation where you can't take a shot without hurting an ally; using rifles only can leave you with no time to reload when it's life or death.

If you cut WAY back in Intelligence, Willpower and Charisma, this should be all good so far. You'd start the game with Body/Quickness/Ranged/one gun, or with Body/Strength/Close Combat/Swords OR unarmed. As the plot unfolds and you earn more karma, you would diversify gradually while making sure your "main" one kept up with the growing demands of the game. In late game, your "second" tree could catch up and become more equal. However, the combination of primary stats, secondary stats and weapon skills would tap you out pretty quickly.

Robo-legs and their increased range of movement will help with both swordfighting and gunfighting footwork. I'd get cybernetic arms if swordsmanship is your "main" means of damage-dealing, and the body upgrades are always wise for a melee fighter who doesn't use magic.

Since you won't be able to use advanced gunfighting special moves, you might also want to use the cybernetic eye upgrade and Smartlink guns to let range and accuracy take the place of fancy tricks. A smartlink gunfighter with cybernetics, fairly basic weapons skills and a melee skill tree could work, but it would be very hard to keep up with the pace of growth the game ordinarily pushes for.

Thanks! Will try to do something about it, and maybe I could simply try it in a campaign different from DMS. Dunno which one tho, There a lot that seem interesting
